Hi all ! Just wondering if someone could tell me at what age a car is classed as a classic ? Is there a fixed age or does it depend on the make/model ?

Does a classic car become exempt from tax or just a reduced rate ?

What are the requirements regarding NCT etc ?

    Thanks

    Ken

So does mean that all 1981 and subsequent cars going forward will need the NCT even when the become "classics".?

All cars registered anywhere in the world on or after 01/01/1980 will need an NCT every year from June 1st, 2011. Even when these cars are over 60 years old in 30 years time

I think you meant "all cars first registered anywhere in the world...." instead of "All cars registered anywhere in the world...".
Cars not registered in Ireland does not need NCT.

I hear the cut off point is 1981 for €48 motor tax, i.e. if the car is not 30 years old already it will never qualify for reduced rate tax :(

    Any truth in this?

This rumour comes up a few times every year giving all of us '82 and newer classic owners a big fright. So far there's no truth in it and let's please keep quiet about it :)

I still want a trans am or chevy comaro as a weekend car.... 50 quid tax make it perfect classic car...

All cars that become classic now are prety much high performance cars... I would not be surprised to see classics as everyday cars in a good 10-15 years...
