Connecting Laptop to Desktop?

Hi. Just a quick question...I have a Desktop(XP) and a Laptop(Windows7), I have a ethernet cable. Can I connect these two together for LAN? I just want to transfer some files between them. Ive been reading alot of intructions online and none seem to work. Am I missing something? (oh im sorry if this might be the wrong…
