Question about subtitles - Particularly on 19.2 east

I'm currently trying to improve my German so I am watching Astra 1 quite a bit. But there is one thing I don't understand. Why is there no subtitle data on any of the channels it is very frustrating because you can hear the language but you can't read it which would be very helpful.

So am I right in thinking that there is no subtitles on all the German channels or am I doing something wrong? Every time I press subtitles it says "No Subtitle Data"

Some German channels provide subtitles, mainly the state broadcasters, ARD, ZDF, ARTE, 3SAT, and the regionals, WDR, NDR e.t.c., but the percentage of programmes subtitled is nowhere near as many as UK TV does, German TV uses the ordinary analogue teletext for it's subtitles, I don't know what type/make of receiver you have but if it has teletext built in you need to be pressing text and putting the subtitles number in, if box has no teletext built in, use your TV's text,
most German channels use 150 for subtitles, but ZDF uses 777 ARTE i think 150,
i dont use them, i speak German having lived there previously,
every German channel has analogue teletext, pressing text on each channel and looking through the index list for the pager, usually 101 to 106, and looking for the words "UNTERTITEL" will tell you if that channel has subtitles and what number they are on, they usually have a page that lists which programmes are subtitled too

I get the same on all channels I have tried except RTL. But when I select subtitles nothing comes on screen.

read my previous post, it will set you right, they do it with analogue teletext

I can't thank you enough for that post Rob it will help me a lot when trying to learn the lingo. My lnb is wrecked on my fixed dish but I still have my motorised dish to play with. 777 works grand on ZDF anyway. I've been going through the channels for days pressing subtitle button on each one and only about 3 channels work. One of which is French. I tried 888 on teletext also on a lot of them.

By the way was was looking at your website its very good and well updated not like many satellite sites that give out very old info.

i too thought it was your lnb but needed to check the basics first
f the channels that provide subtitles , not many provide them in digital form which is how pressing the subtitle button works, the analogue teletext is better
150 is the common number or 777, but don't forget, UNTERTITEL is the magic word

I found this on Wikipedia if anyone else watches 19.2 a lot and are trying to pick up some German or if you are simply trying to understand what they are saying.

You mean SFinfo and ORF2E, SF1+2, and ORF 1+2 are scrambled

One other thing BR Alpha has the odd English language learning show for Germans, if you use a bit of "reverse psychology" you could maybe learn one or two phrases from that, check the teletext TV listings or the EPG listings for the week, my advice to you also is to keep a German/English dictionary handy as some words you will hear often, like i said previously i speak it so i'm ok, i'm ok too for all the Austrian channels, including ORF 1+2, but that's another story:D

Of the free to air French channels, TV5 MONDE EUROPE and TV5 MONDE FBS, (they do show different programmes sometimes) on Astra 1 and also Hotbird have French subtitles, i cant remember the numbers off hand, but a check of their teletext and looking for the words "sous-titres" will get you what you want.
ARTE France on Astra 1 and Hotbird also carries subtitles in French, same applies "sous-titres" is the magic word on the teletext, but if you watch ARTE on Astra 1 make sure you have the French version of ARTE not the German one, there are two completely separate versions, French ARTE is on 11.934 V.
the only other ones i can think of off hand are the French state channels, France 2, France 3, and France 5 on Atlantic bird 3 at 5 degrees west, also have French subtitles.
