Catholics annoyed by catholicism

So. I have friends and family in Castlebar where The Missions are taking place at the moment (Missionaries hold evening prayers, special masses, visit the schools and generally whoop it up for Jesus).
The missionaries were denied access to some of the secondary schools where they were traditionally welcome as these schools have become secular but naturally the Convent school had them in and interested parents and student from all over were welcome to come along . A few students asked questions about homosexuality, sex before marriage and living together and were given the official catholic line i.e 'Its wrong" but with a bit more detail... a bit more ...
Lo and behold some parents, 'catholic' parents, with 'catholic' children who knowingly attended a Catholic mission are not happy with catholic answers and are most irate!!!!!
I have just come of two rather shouty phone chats with 1 sibling and one friend who are amongst the people annoyed by the Missionaries answers!
Is this sort of hypocrital horse sh1te particular to Irish Catholics or is this Catholics all over?

I've always maintained that the more you learn about Catholicism, the less likely you are to believe in it.

Pity this didn't happen before the census.

It's the usual hypocritical brand of Catholicism in this country, no-one believes in it but is offended if someone suggests so.

Typical Irish attitude TBH, rather than admit they aren't proper Catholics, they demand that the Catholic Church change to suit them.
Much as I disagree with the missionaries' opinion on the topics in the OP, at least they are sticking to their guns and not trying to fool anyone.

All they're probably missing is tact. If theyre spouting stuff like "homosexuality is a sin in the eyes of the lord" as I imagine they might be then theres uproar, but if they say "well... you know the church doesnt really agree with that kind of thing" thats fine I'm sure.

Sticking to their horribly bigoted and hateful guns. I wouldn't say fair play to them - I'd say to hell with them.

*if I believed Hell existed......to Albert Square with them

If they went to catholic schools as children/teens, which I'm sure they did, they should know what to expect. They have the option of specifying in advance that their child not be included in any extra-curricular catholic activities so why didn't they just do that? As the alternative exists of a more secular catholic school why didn't they go with it? It clearly is an oxymoron that fits their beliefs.
The schools are just operating according to their ethos, the parents should take such things into account when choosing a school.

But down to the question, its an Irish thing IMO. I blame rapid maturation of our society, in one generation people saw a highly catholic society with strict catholic morals and also a relatively secular society, with relatively secular values. Many are stuck somewhere in between, they try to merge the two by ignoring the harsher realities of catholicism and the church generally allows them by keeping mum on the issue.

No to be honest I have more respect for a true believing Catholic at least they believe in what they claim to believe in and to be honest they are a pretty voiceless minority like all other extremistsfundamentalists (for want of a better word). The a-la-carte believers are to blame though for propping up the fundamentalist beliefs by sharing the same very well defined label (a label that supports the views of the fundamentalist).

I have recently read parts of another thread where people are RC even though they don't like a lot of their views. Instead of leaving they hope to force them to transform!

To demonstrate the result of a-la-carte Catholics I'll offer a comparison to a group with some nasty views, NOT to say the views are similar but the hypothetical situation.

Imagine the KKK had 100,000 new members, none of whom are really racist. They just like the outfits, burning wood, the company and the weekly cake raffle. They hope to either ignore the racist side of the KKK or want to transform them to eliminate it. A few of the 100,000 might even be black! The problem is the KKK leaders will claim their large membership supports their views and it will strengthen their resolve that they are right. It will also justify media time for them as they represent so many peoples views.
I don't blame the nutters that are the real believers of the KKK, they are who they are. I blame the 100,000 who wrongly use the label and gives power to the nutters that shouldn't have any (like most nutters, including the KKK in real life).
