The attachment shows the current reading from Disk Utility.

I am have an XP partition on it also which I think is 60Gb so is this the problem.
If I delete from the XP partition will this help or is it the mac side I need to clean up?

    Thanks

Sorry, no, deleting from the XP partition won't help. But if you delete the entire XP partition the hard drive will be restored to a single partition, which will give that 60GB back to OS X (you can do this using Bootcamp). If this isn't an option you'll just have to free up space on the Mac side.

Thanks: I have Parallels as the 'splitter'

Is there a Mac utility which works like Remove programs in XP?

Cant see any attachment but if you have enough space install GrandPerspective or (better?) OmniDiskSweeper to give you an idea of what files you need to remove. Leave XP partition alone unless , as the Professor suggests you remove it altogether. Programs on Mac are usually packages so to uninstall you can usually just trash them ( ungraceful but effective ). I wouldn't be in a rush to remove applications until you check out whats in your User folder.
