2 weeks ago I bought a 91 1.6 diesel golf with nct till jan 12 for 390euro. So far I have 700 miles done and no problems. Have been driving at 45mph to see what mpg I would get and I'm getting 73mpg out of her:D

In time I will do her up but enjoying the frugality for the moment.

The cars actually running very well and will cruise at 80mph no bother, I have had a few of them and this one is running the best, small miles on it at 223k tho!

As for the mpg if you were to drive her at up to 60 mph she will still return 60mpg no problem. I had one before that I got 74mpg out of. These tests were done with a full tank and the tracking is slightly off and I had the drivers window down 3 inches so there may be a little more mpg to be eeked out.

These figures are for the straight diesel, I don't go in for that gay turbo craic!

I can't see anything wrong with it. That is what these cars achieve if you drive normally.

No all my calculations are correct, I am working with the european gallon at 4.54 litres. I teach mathematics and have a masters in a numerical subject so I can calculate mpg:D Anyone who had a mk2 straight diesel will tell you that they were a miser on diesel. Actually it's very easy to brim the diesel on a mk2 as you can look into the tank:D

Not sure what the motorway consumption was on them but I doubt it was at 45mph!
