Well done thats as young as I've seen. The youngest in my class to get a consultants post was 31 as well. Most didn't til their late 30's and AFAIK as many again (from my year) are still waiting.

The oldest SHO I've seen was late 40's.

If i was a real doctor then maybe, but seeing as I'm actually a nurse, and my username relates to an ancient Greek and monkey I'm sure I'll survive :p

I did say congrats though at the time

A consultant in the hospital where I work got her post at the age of 29.

I can't answer the question about oldest SHOs, I don't tend to ask them their ages!

Hold on a minute. I shouldn't be slagging you. Your one of those minted consultants now! I'd be quite happy to be a kept man ya know Ms Sam34..... ;)

On a more serious note, would being a young consultant a difficult thing? Being younger than your peers in any job can be difficult, would it be any more or less difficult do you think in medicine?

Sam since you are a consultant so young won't you get bored!?!? you no longer have years of slaving to do before consultancy. Won't playing golf becoming boring much too soon ?

i havent found it to be an issue with my psych colleagues, be they other consultants, nursing staff or psychologists etc.

what i have noticed is some condescending attitudes from medical/surgical consultants, the ones that have an issue with psych anyway and then they see me rock up... i happen to look a few years younger than i actually am, so it raises a few eyebrows. likewise, ive had the odd GP say "i've been a GP for 20 years, you've only been a consultant a few months..."

my attitude to that is that my age isnt an issue, ive proven myself in my training, my CV and my interview and now i'm proving myself in the service i provide. that speaks for itself.

i get it from some patients too, "you're too young to be a consultant"... i usually laugh it off by saying that im not as young as i look, or thanks for the compliment.

Good for you! i like your attitude of "my work speaks for itself". When you are good, you are good. F**k the begrudgers.

Thats good to hear Sam. I think you are right about the snobbery were psych is concerned. I've seen that in nursing too.

I wonder would the same positive attitudes exist in medical or surgical though? Youngest surgical consultant I knew of was about 34 or 35. Never seemed to have any bother, that was in ortho thoughthry always tend to pretty sound.
