Are both not working on one side or just one? Did you check the wiring looms were not cut where the door meets the frame of the car?

When you say not working do you mean the motor or the regulator just isnt moving? When you press the button can you hear the motor? The regs can go on these. Iv done a few or them. The cables get caught up and break.

The sisters A4 had the same trouble and it turned out to be the regulator.

I had an A4 and had problems with the elecs as well...windows refusing to fully close...OBC telling me lights were blown.Seems to be a common problem.

So the windows are actually working, its just the switch thats acting up?
Usually you just pop out the switch unit with a screwdriver but I cant remember if its held in with screws on the A4. Maybe someone else remembers.
Have a good look and see if theres any screws. If not it should pop out. And check the connection. If your not confident enough drop into an indy garage. Should only be a quick fix

Window regulator is shagged, very common problem on the A4.

I would check that the wiring loom isnt broken at the door jam - where it goes across from the car to the door. Very common problem and cheap to fix. Start there as it is the cheapest and very easy to check - you can just pop off the rubber cover and peel it back to have a look.
