New social circles?

Hi guys, fairly new to this site so hoping I've posted this thread in the right spot...

Anyways, I'm 23 and lately I've noticed the social circle dwindling...friends off around the world, relationships, other parts of the country etc. and to be honest I never had that many friends to begin with anyway. I'm going to Dublin for a year next month as I procured a contract up there, being a wee culchie..chances are I'll get lost in the dazzling lights of the big smoke :)

I've been in college the last few years and the course was rather demanding and the hours very much anti-social, I wasn't left with much free time. So now that I'm somewhat free, I want a fresh start and really make the most of it. I'm looking for ideas on clubs, sports I can join or anything that would be a good and easy way to make new friends. I'll admit I'm not big into the team sports like football, gaa etc but probably more suited to rowing and the likes so that's on the agenda I think, anything similar to that, that may be right up my alley d'ya think?

Of course not all sport now either, I'll try anything (except the damn gaa ;)) volunteer work, book clubs, drama...anything! what's happening in the big smoke...I've a one or two friends up there but not many so I'll need more...more! :D

In same boat, almost friendless sadly :) pma though and all that. Just moved up to dublin and Im planning to reconnect through trying to make more of an effort to meet up with person I know there, and hopefully that will expand into more social circles. I think there is a boards social group that might be interesting? planning on tagging along myself. Unfortunately I know where youa re coming from, find it hard to make friends and I am kind of bad at keeping in contact (texting ringing etc) even though that doesnt mean I care. Moving into a flat with a few girl mates realy usually helps though! lived with three girls and really helped (until they moved to different countries/pre facebook).

Your workplace will probably be a good start, and then friends of friends.

Be up for everything. When I moved to Australia and knew nobody I had the motto, say no to nothing, and it was great. Never have the attitude "I couldn't be bothered", or "I'm too tired". For your first 6 months in Dublin, vow that you will go to or try anything you are asked to do.

There are so many clubs you can join. And volunteering is amazing for meeting people and making friends and feeling great about yourself (I am heavily involved in a voluntary group, so feel free to PM me if you think volunteering is something you might enjoy). There's tonnes of rowing clubs and from what I could see looking at them on my run this morning, they look like good fun, but hard work. Any clubs like that have a huge social aspect. Tag rugby is also supposed to be great for socialising and I don;t think you have to be that good!!

If you don't want to volunteer on an ongoing basis, there are loads of one off or annual events in Dublin that look for people to help out from time to time, and these are extremely sociable.

Evening classes aren't the best, as people don't really get a chance to chat, but again be open to them. Summer is coming so it's a great time to be out and about meeting new people.

If you get invited out, to parties and whatnot, be open, be friendly, suggest stuff to new people, make it known without coming across as desperate that you are up for stuff. The people who struggle to make friends in the big city are the people who sit in the corner waiting for the fun to come to them, you need to make it happen.

It sounds like you will be working in a big company though, and if so, I guarantee you, you will have a great group of friends after a short while there. Work has been where most of my great friendships have started since leaving college.

Good luck. And have fun! You have so much of it to look forward to :)
