stupid questions

2 questions that have probably been asked 17 million times before but anyway:

    1. how does the non-adjacent grant work? I live in Cork, but if I went to uni in UL and lived in a student village near the campus would that be non-adjacent because it's more than 24km from my parents house? or would I have to be living over 24km away myself?

    2. Can grant money only be used to pay for student fees or are you free to do what you want with it (accomodation, beer etc? ;))

    thanks

Edit: just some extra info- my parents income is quite low so I'd most likely be eligible for the highest amount of grant.

1: you need to live 24km away from parents house, so since they live in Cork, and your going to UL, then thats fine and it should qualify you for the non adjacent rate.

2: the grant is paid into your account, so your free to do with it as you please.
they will also pay your registration fee, so they does not come out of the money you receive each month.

just to let other readers of this thread know, it doesnt really affect you but the qualifying distance was changed in the last budget from 24km to 45km

Should probably also point out that, while you are free to do what you like with the monthly payments, if you're recorded as having missed too much college (e.g less spending on accomodation and more on beer :P ) they can suspend and even abolish your application.

what? never heard of this before

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

They don't just give you a grant because you applied for the course. They take attendance from the institute, and if you miss a certain amount of days, you don't get paid. If they didn't have something like this in place then loads of people would apply for college, get grants and never go!

I don't actually think this is true. Im currently in UCD on a grant and they don't check attendance. I've studied in another college where I know for certain this didn't happen. Also it does not in any way make sense - the colleges would have to be keeping attendance rolls for every person on a grant and sending all that information to 80 different grant authorities. It might happen in some colleges but certainly not all of them.

Well I know they've run it like that in AIT, DIT and DKIT for sure. Since actually only last week my best friend's grant was suspended for missing two consecutive months of college. And she was told by the grants office why she was suspended. And just because a lecturer doesn't pass around a sheet to sign, doesn't mean they havn't taken attendance. I know a few colleges that have on their desks a photo ID for all students meant to be in their class, and they take attendance that way.
Obviously they can't keep tabs on everyone, but I know a fair few people, say 10 or 11, who have lost grant payments due to a bad (unexplained) attendance record.

yep the loftier nui's generally don't, it goes against the academic culture, learning for the sake of learning. the institutes do as they would be viewed as vocational learning specific skills for a specific job.

Thats why employers view institute grads more favourably cos uni grads are generally tofu eating, sandal wearing, save the trees wasters .

Oh before anyone starts I do be a NUI grad and fall into the the very narrow stereotype I have described. I must put up some Jim Morrison posters and get me a bean bag.man. Free Tibet and the Pope is not cool, he is against democracy, same sex unions and Pope Jp 2 worked for the CIA aswell, unlike the Dali Lhama....................oh wait.

    ss:)

ps Does anyone know where Jim Fitzpatrick lives I want to get my Che poster signed?
