Pharmacy?

I have Pharmacy in UCC down as my first choice on the CAO so I'm looking for information from current students on how they find it. I do both Chemistry and Biology in school, I absolutely love them but I'm wondering is there a big jump entering into the degree, what are the modules/labs/tutorials like and is the workload manageable? How do you find keeping up with work and a social life? All that jazz. :) Just hit me with all the info you've got :P

If all goes well in June, and points don't shift too much, I'll definitely be a potential candidate. If I do end up getting it, my points will probably just about meet requirements and I've always imagined that I'd be thrown in with a bunch of people much smarter than me. I'm probably coming across as extremely naive, I know the LC isn't an IQ test, but it's always seemed very daunting to enter course with people hitting very high points.

On the other hand, if the opposite happens and I don't get the points are there any courses with a large Chemistry and Biology base that anyone would recommend?

Biochem? No harm to put it down as a back up plan.

How about Biomedical Science? Lots of medical microbiology, clinical biochemistry, sciencey stuff, would really suit you if you're interested in doing something medical with loads of scope for research afterwards...you can do it in CIT or UCC, and would qualify you to work in a hospital laboratory also. Just throwing out the idea since the points although pretty decent are never near as crazy as those for pharmacy/medicine/dentistry etc.

I don't think that's fully correct. I checked out the course a while back at the open day and it's offered as a joint course, you don't choose which one you do it in. That put me off it quite a bit, not being based in the one location and having to take buses everyday. If I was to head down the medical laboratory worker I think the course in Galway would appeal to me more.
Anyway, I'll have to carefully revise my CAO application soon anyway but I have 'till the 1st of July so that's grand. :)

Any Pharmacy students out there? :)

I did the course in UCC. You can PM me with questions if you want.

I beg your pardon Exothermic, I had meant to say you can do it in CIT/UCC, the Biomedical science course is split between the two institutions, rather than there being a choice, my bad !! If travelling between the two is offputting for you then the GMIT course would of course be more appealing. One could argue in favour of this course that you get the experience of both an IT and University, and the clubs societies sports facilities libraries etc. both have to offer. I did the course when it was a 3 year certificate in GMIT which included 1 year in-service in a hospital and then moved down to Cork to do the final 2 years for my degree in UCC/CIT.

Anyway, I was just giving you the Biomed suggestion, if you're good at Chemistry/Biology. The most important thing is that you are making an informed choice of course based on your strengths and interests, I must applaud you for having the foresight for doing this. Every year thousands of school leavers blindly put down courses on the CAO form without doing their research, thus not having a clue what they are getting into, leading to drop outs.

    Best of luck :)

Putting down Pharmacy as a back up to med..just wondering exothermic why you have UCC first? Is it closer or have you heard some positive things about the course?? Still trying to decide whether to put ucc or tcd first...so hard 2 find opinions on the pharm courses on this :/
