    Hey guys quick q -

If I register a .ie domain as a discretionary name -but then want to start trading a month or two afterwards, can I then change the category with my domain registration company or how does that work?

You need to have an existing connection to the domain to register it in the first place. If that connection changes, IEDR won't chase you. If you are ever going to use a domain for business, then you cannot register it as a natural person / discretionary name

Changing class/category implies a domain holder change, so a fax to them with your new status would be fine (and obviously something to show the revised connection to the domain)

Get a .com makes things a lot easier! :)

It's easier, but I wouldn't get one instead of a .ie domain, I'd get one as well as the .ie domain name - and that's if the .com is even available. I think a .ie domain can give potential customers a good bit more confidence that they're dealing with a genuinely Irish business.

Anyway - it's really simple to get a .ie domain name with a registered business name. For €20 you just register it on core.ie, and give the RBN number to the IEDR once it's approved.

If you are intending to use the domain for business purposes at some stage in the future then you should apply under one of the business categories. Sole traders, companies and busineses can also apply under the discretionary category if the .ie domain name application does not fall under any of the other categories
