If only my mates wouldn't all think I was a pretentious pratt....

I dont see a great deal there. Early E65 which is both ugly and often troublesome and with no mention of mileage. Worth little now.

    what trouble do they give?

Early ones are electrical nighmares I believe - Little of which can be sorted outside of a dealership.

Yeah there'd be huge bills potential there I'd imagine...still what an amount of car for 11 grand. You'd just have to make for the French Riviera if you owned that!

Id have the facelift but not that model.

I'd take this one over the one linked in the OP if I was so inclined.

Could you expect 30 to the gallon in that do you think?

I think that model looks well, I'm a fan of the newer bmw styling I have to say.

That car most likely has space shuttle mileage on it though especially when its not mentioned.

As would I, if I owned an oil refinery...

Electrical problems in the early E65s tend to be overrated somewhat - a lot seem to have been down to unfamiliarity with iDrive and buggy software, which should mostly have been sorted at this stage. I've looked at quite a few early ones and one problem though is that A LOT of them are in an unforgiveable state - falling to bits through neglect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 412 ✭✭manatoo

What kind of neglect? They're all relatively new still, including the earliest ones, surely they don't need too much molly-coddling?

from the 2 730d's ive been in on both the idrive estimates 18-22mpg , not sure if thats just the drivers but id say thats the computer possibly being optimistic, theyre a heavy car. if your going to drive a 7er you may as well go all out for a 750 or 760. also the e65 looks rank imo , go find a lovely e38

parts are expensive and since the recession hit , services have gone over required intervals, parts such as shocks and brake pads wouldnt have been replaced ,even the ones that were serviced probably need A/T oil changed, Aircon re-gassed or a few sensors replaced. electrical issues wouldnt have been tended to and Id say a fair few need a few fault codes reset

Hmm....would changing pads on a car like that be a DIY job same as any other car?

discs surely you mean ? :)

No, pads! Why would the discs need changing??

Discs wear too, once they are down to a certain thickness they are recommended to be changed. Loads of significantly lipped discs around though.

Well up until the 18-22 mpg it was actually looking semi-affordable. The asking price isn't too bad, it's just under a 3 litre so tax would be 1293. Steep but not terminal, being a BMW you should hope it wouldn't be the worst in terms of things going wrong and the according repair bills - not Japanese standard but not French standard either but yeah 20 mpg is a non runner for me at the mileage I do :(

A set of tyres and basic servicing for 20,000 miles could easily see a grand a year being required for maintenance, that would be with nothing actually going wrong. I would think the average mpg would be well over 20mpg though once most of your journeys were not urban, a lad at work had a 535d that returned 35+ for him and he wasn't lightfooted. The 7 is a bigger bus but still 20mpg is quite pessimistic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 412 ✭✭manatoo

Yeah I tend to get my tyres preworn for a tenner....not sure the kind of establishments I get them in would have stock for a 7 series on the shelf!!

What servicing above the standard 5 litres of black stuff and a paper filter would something like this need realistically?

You'd defo give it a fuel filter and an air filter at every 2nd oil change at a minimum really, BMW probably recommend longer but on a diesel in Ireland with sh1tty enough diesel being not uncommon it would be wise to go more frequent. These yokes also would have a crankcase breather filter like on the 3 series so that needs changing too every 2nd or 3rd oil change. Also they need a quality engine oil, Castrol Edge 5 30 or the like I think. Long oil change intervals won't be good for the turbo so annual or 12K miles would be good practise on one of them, especially if it has only been after 18K intervals. I also reckon more than 5L of oil might be required, I know the 2.0 BMW diesel takes 7 ish litres :)

And of course a big, auto diesel will be heavy on pads.

Still no more than a regular 3 series diesel or a 75 tho needs really no?

Would the fuel filter and the crankcase breather filter be DIY jobs? Plus if it's every 2nd service when it'd need these you'd still be ok to do a good 20k before worrying about them?

Fuel and crankcase filter would indeed by 100% DIY jobs. Thing is they would well be due when you buy the car, then an oil change in 12k miles time and they are due again the next time. I really wouldn't run a diesel like that on oil that's done 12K miles.

Also, chances are you'll get stung for the likes of a battery, coolant change or brake fluid change too every year. Again that's all normal maintenance with nothing going wrong.

Not the way I do it ;)

But yeah I'd prob need to be more serious about maintenance with a car like that....

Well, even being half assed half a coolant change would do no harm, just drain the rad and refill that with coolant and fresh de i water mix, that would be better than neglecting it altogether. If it needs a battery it needs a battery, an 04 may still be on the factory one and if it is the clock is very much ticking. Brake fluid changes can be neglected and are by most folk. So too lipped discs but if they have to be done eventually.

Stuff like CV joints, ABS sensors, bits of exhaust etc could go anytime.

I'm not OTT on maintenance myself but certain things just have to be done.

I reckon I could afford it overall....but people would think you were a total pratt, that's the worst thing about it :(

I dunno, lad near me has an 03 or 04 petrol one that he got a year or so ago, no one thinks he's a prat. He's 40 odd though. Wouldn't let what folks think about it bother me anyway, you're the one driving and paying for it.

Yeah but I ain't 40 and people do slag people who buy very big premium brand cars when they're a few years old. Plus I'm from the country so EVERYONE in the area would know I had bought it. Especially considering the car I've had for the last 6,000 odd years it'd be some notable change!

    that's that so :pac:

you could have an easier time looking after an e38 or a lexus gs300 for similar / less money , big cars = big bills, but an e65 is a bag of hurt to run on a tight budget

Why would you give a flying fvck what anyone thinks? If you want a 7 series drive one and enjoy it.
