14 teams in this years Championship (5 in Munster, 9 in Leinster)

6 of these won't make the Provincial Semi-Finals.

4 of the Provincial Semi-Finalists won't advance to the Provincial Finals.

How are these 10 teams narrowed down to 2 representatives going forward to the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals???

Anyone know the exact format for this year???

    Two provincial winners into semis

    Two provincial losers into quarters

Ten take part in the qualifiers to gain one of two 1/4 placings

Losing semi finalists would probably only have to win one game... after that the others are cannon fodder anyway(bar maybe one team from Munster)

Last years system had the 5 1st Round Provincial losers (Tipp from Munster, Antrim, Carlow, Laois and Wexford from Leinster) play off, including a provisional game, to produce 2 teams. (Tipp and Antrim)

The 4 losing Provincial Semi-Finalists played-off producing 2 winners (Dublin and Offaly)

The 2 winners from Phase 1 met the 2 winners from Phase 2.

The 2 winners from these games got to the All-Ireland Quarters against the 2 beaten Provincial Finals.

Im just wondering how is it going to work this year with an extra team (Westmeath) participating.

Will there be an extra Provisional Round game in Phase 1 or a new system entirely???

I hope they've ditched that idiotic idea of having provincial semi-finalists play each other - why do teams getting further in the competition get the harder draw? If you lose in the 1st round you could play carlow/westmeath in the qualifiers, if you lose in the semi-finals you could play galway/dublin/wexford at the same stage. Makes no sense!

I'l do some googling and see what the story is.

    Fully agree. Unfortunately, it stays.

Another big problem with it is that the semi final losers have to play their qualifier phase a week after the first phase of qualifier games. 7 days later, the two losing semi finalists who win their qualifiers, have to play against teams who exited their provincial championship at an earlier stage who also happen to have an extra weeks rest behind them too...

An extra provisional phase 1 game to answer your question. The 6 teams who don't make their provincial semi finals are entered into an open draw, 2 pairs of 2 drawn out, remaining 2 straight into Phase I proper.

Would be a decent system if they could get Kerry back playing in Munster and another team into Leinster (Down/Wicklow?) by next year.

16 teams overall would mean the 8 teams who don't make Provincial Semi-Finals playing off to make 4 (Phase 1).

These 4 could then face the 4 losing Provincial Semi-Finalists (Phase 2).

The 4 winners from Phase 2 could then play off for 2 Quarter-Final places.

Its far from ideal at the moment compared to the Football System!

    Ya' wha'?

That seems a strange idea. Throw them in just to make up numbers like?
There are 14 teams in Tier 1, and 8 in Tier 2.

You could take 4 teams out of Tier 1 and put them in Tier 2 - Laois, Carlow, Westmeath and Antrim (the perliminary round teams) and play a straight knock out competition.

    5 Leinster vs 5 Munster.

Though personally, I dont really care about the provinces - sure theres Galway and Antrim in Leinster. Lets just do an open draw from the 10 teams.

It would not be the same for Clare/Cork/Limerick/Waterford and Tipperary supporters not travelling to Thurles/Limerick or Cork for a munster championship game in may or june.

Those days are unique and not many sporting events in the world can live up to Munster Hurling final day.

I even think if they did decide to make the all ireland an open draw and run the Munster/Leinster championships as stand alone tournments then it would take away form them ie it would not matter if you won it and it would be sort of a cup like the waterford crystal cup and walsh cup.

So you only want 10 teams competing for the All-Ireland in an open draw knockout competition?!

That makes a grand total of 9 C'ship games over the Summer.

It'd be high-quality stuff but how could get decent sponsorship money for such a limited competition. Crowds and TV money would be well down too.

And as for "throwing teams in to make up the numbers" isn't that what Dublin were doing up until recently?!
