ISSF Authorities visited the area where the Olympic Shooting Range will be completed in the next months. The shooting range will be a temporary facility now being built on the grounds of East London’s iconic Royal Artillery Barracks.

Construction for the 2012 Olympic Games shooting venue has now begun, and ISSF Authorities visited the area where the Olympic Shooting Range will be completed in the next months.

ISSF President Olegario Vázquez Raña visited the venue site, and there he received a detailed briefing on the range plans, toured the site and participated in a ceremonial groundbreaking for the project. ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber and Vice President Gary Anderson accompanied him in the visit, in occasion of the 2011 SportAccord Convention in London.
“The ISSF strongly supported the selection of the Royal Artillery Barracks site because it is in the heart of the Olympic venues and, for our athletes, will be only 20 minutes from the Olympic Village. “ The ISSF President said.

ISSF Vice Presidents Gary Anderson and Medhat Wahdan are the two Technical Delegates for the 2012 shooting events, for Rifle & Pistol and Shotgun events, respectively. “We are constantly in touch with the Olympic Development Authority.” Mr. Anderson explained. “We were told that the venue would be completed by November. Then, the interiors and the target systems will be installed between January and February.”

The venue will be tested between the 17th and the 29th of April 2012, when a Pre-Olympic World Cup will be held at the range.

The shooting range will be a temporary facility

    :(

Although, it is jolly nice to see a lad wearing a Sisk's hi-vis jacket!
Delighted that some Irish lads will do well out at the Olympic ranges between now and 2012!:D

Yeah, that's gotten a lot of folks very annoyed.
On the upside, if they do it right and distribute the electronic targets and other kit around the ranges all over the UK, they could improve things there quite a bit - right now, if you're a good shooter in the UK and don't live within easy travel distance of Bisley, there's a lot of money invested by the NSRA in kit that you can't use :( The scottish lads (including WC medal winners) are in that boat, as are the NI shooters and others.

NSRA: North Surrey Rifle Assoc. (Apparently)!:D

(Maybe we should get a couple of sisk's lads to pack up a transit for us when they're all done and dusted?! ;) )

The test event next year is a nice one to have a crack at, minimal travelling. Depends where exam times fall. If not that, hopefully they'll be done in time for Milan/Munich, which is very early. 13th to 27th May. I want to be at a couple of those.

Sparks, why has this gotten alot of people upset?

Sisk are currently doing a number of contracts for the 2012 games?

There's a very long-running debate on the temporary nature of the venue as it would leave no legacy to British shooting in the form of updated services. It's suspected that the resources poured into it in the form of targets and setup won't be dispersed among British clubs afterwards as is supposedly intended. The counter proposal was Bisley, with the argument against that being that currently the Lord Roberts Centre is being rented out for roller hockey and weddings just to pay for its light and heat, because the use it gets from shooters can't support it. Adding the extra infrastructure for the entire 2012 programme would make Bisley so expensive to maintain that it would collapse under its own weight and would become completely untenable, resulting in its closure. Essentially, it was impossible to do it perfectly because there wasn't already a venue in place capable of doing the games justice and earning its keep. Add in the bitterness caused by the pistol stuff and Olympic athletes being treated with suspicion and damn near as criminals for the games and the discontent is quite palpable.

I think what I meant was misread in some way!:o

I for one am delighted Sisks or anyone else have gotten whatever contracts over in the UK they have been able to successfully tender for. More power to them and with a bit of luck, plenty of Irish lads and ladies may get some work out of this too for the duration.

I was being sarcastic / joking when I wrote "that some Irish lads will do well out at the Olympic ranges" - bit of an in-joke!! I can think of a couple of Irish Lads (and Ladies perhaps too) who'll hopefully be at the Olympic ranges over in London for a good bit more than just building the place! Me, I'd just be happy to be holding the dumb-end of a tape-measure over there between now and then!:D;)

Just thought I'd explain what I really meant to avoid any confusion or anyone taking me up the wrong way on this.

Footnote: If anyone from Sisks is reading this, please contact me by PM and I'd gladly email you my CV for consideration!:D:D
