Hey guys. I have Windows 7 64-bit and programs such as Google Chrome, Firefox and even Steam (sometimes), won't open. I check the task manager and the processes are active it just won't appear on the screen.

I was wondering if anybody has an idea as to what is going on or any idea to help.

    Thanks in advance. Ryan

Did you install the 64 bit versions? Try uninstalling them and reinstalling. make sure you install them as an administrator. Check your firewall is not blocking them.

My firewall is definitely not blocking them as I had them running perfect for months now, it all just started this morning. Also my Avast won't open now either.

And is there an option to download a 64-bit Google Chrome?

Stupid question but have you tired a reboot?
i dont think google have a x64 version of google chrome...saying that i could be wrong.
TBH it sounds like a virus or some corrupted reg entry!
I'd try starting in safe mode and running mcafee's stinger h##p://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx

Failing all this save yourself the hasstle of troubleshooting and restore your system to a the nearest point hopefully you have one within the last week

I got my Avast to work by adding it as a game on Steam, and doing a full scan now. Hopefully if anything is wrong it will detect it.

I dont know that much about steam but it shouldnt prevent your AV from working.

If i were you i would disable steam and see how you get on.
If that corrects this issue the maybe re-install and keep an eye in it when its installing....Steam should NOT be blocking you AV!

    Id be concerned about that.

No, Steam is helping it work to work. The only reason it is working is because im launching it through Steam, if that makes any sense.

If i understand you right you:

    1. Have had win 7 working fine for months and only now experiencing this problem.

    2. Gor avast to work by getting steam to start it rather than you starting it through windows explorer.

If the above is the case i suspect you have either registry damage or possibly more likely some sort of malware.

I would suggest downloading ccleaner at http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

    And MalwareBytes at http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Both should probably be run in safe mode if possible.

Registry damage was the problem. I used Ccleaner's registry cleaner a few days ago and it must have deleted some important stuff.

I restored them and everything seems to be running perfectly. Thanks.
