Car Registration Number

My son is looking to buy a car and the reg is 00D 11**** so there are a total of 6 digits in the number...
That would make over 110,000 cars registered in the Dublin area in the year 2000. Would that be correct or am I being overly suspicious with regard to the reg number.
I just can ever remember seeing a 6 digit number on a Dublin car before.

    Any info appreciated.

It also includes cars of that age imported every year since 2000

There was a large number of vehicles registered in Dublin and Ireland in general back 2000. With it being a new millenium and there being a scrappage scheme around that time I think that number is normal enough for the year.

You could always run a motorcheck and compare the car's VIN on the report against the one on the car itself for extra piece of mind.

2000 was a crazy year for car sales as people went made for the 00 plates. I remember that when 00D100000 was registered it was a Santa Fe and was all over the papers as some dealer had it on show.

So in short, its perfectly legit.

Abount 5-6 years ago I remember knowing a few people who bought imported BMW 3-series from UK, through garages in Dublin.
They were all registered over 100,000, on a 00-D plate.

Someone said at the time that imports atarted at 100,000
It would make sense as these were on the road before regular irish new regs had got to 100k.

My guess is it was originally a UK import, you'll know upon inspection.
If so, do a UK car check.

I found UK imports for sale here, with a company tracking details inside, when I rang the uk number to check it, I was told the car was a different year than the reg plate - do your checks.

Not in Dublin alone. It at around 114-115 thousand.

I imported in April 08 and got 112751, I've seen up to 113 odd around as far as I remember.

2001 is coming close to the 100,000 mark too, as seen on this 'old/new' Fiat Panda:

I think back in 2006 it went to over 150k cars sold in the capital that year, I remember seeing it on the news.

I seriously doubt that. The only year I think i've seen even over 100k is 00.

there were 225,269 new cars registered in 2000 out of a total of 274,991 new vehicles (249,272 cars in total (new & used) out of 314,292 vehicles).

Of the new vehicles 93,752 were in Dublin whilst 7,301 used cars were registered in the capital.

The highest number of new private cars licensed in 2000 classified by make are Toyota (25,189) followed by Ford (25,064), Nissan (23,231), Volkswagen (22,538), Opel (21,205) and Fiat (16,821).

<caveat>these figures don't include regsitrations for imports since 2000</caveat>

I think motor bikes, commercial vehicles and buses probably pushed the new car registrations in Dublin to over 100,000 in 2000 because the 100000 plate was reserved by a dealer and was assigned before the end of the year i.e. it was not triggered by post-2000 imports. I remember seeing cars (probably company cars) with >100,000 numbers on them at the end of 2000.
