What avi player are you using. . ? I use VLC . . When you sync your ipod, go to the Apps tab (I think) and down the bottom there is an interface that you use to drag files into third party applications.

Don't think that VLC is available from the iTunes store anymore? If you do have it, it's probably the easiest way to transfer movies to the phone as it plays multiple formats.

I haven't watched much stuff on my iPhone for a while now, but I just used a free program called 3GP converter and copied them over as MP4 files. There's probably easier ways to do it, but I liked how it could convert multiple files at a time, plus optimised them for the iPhone screen size.

No longer available, but gold-dust for those of us who downloaded when it was.
Problem with conversion is that it takes so long, particularly for a full length movie !

try azul media player or cinex both with play almost anything even hi-def. They are fairly cheap in the app store. to copy movies to the device go to the apps tab on your phone and then go to the file sharing section at the bottom of the page.

CineXplayer (1.79euro I think?) plays most AVIs although I found on some files the sound didn't come through, VLC is king i'm afraid, i've got it for iPhone/iPad and nothing gets in its way.

Try OPlayer Lite, Free! It will play all manner of video and audio formats and you import your movies via the App tab, File Sharing section (down the bottom of the App page) and sync as normal.

+1 for oplayer. Have tried a good few, got vlc, cinexplayer, yxplayer and so on. The oplayer is by far the best, although the menu isn't very pretty it plays all that does have a really high resolution without bother. As above, get the lite version, it's the same as paid, just with an add on top. Got the paid version for iPad and iPhone, I found it that good.
I also have air video, which again plays all files, but find it best using over home wifi. You don't even need to plug in the iPhone, just stream it from the computer. You can also use this to convert files into iTunes friendly files

Free software called Handbrake has presets for the iphone. Rip your DVD with that and the file it'll create will import into iTunes and look great on your phone.
