THE Mercedes-Benz Unimog is 60 years old this year.

This is an extraordinary piece of machinery. It can go nearly anywhere with its permanent four-wheel drive, powerful engines and high-ground clearance.

Originally used for agriculture, it is widely used by the likes of the ESB Network's fleet, the defence forces, local authorities, firefighters, utility companies and others who need an all-terrain vehicle.

For example, they are often used as snowploughs, or in the depth of jungles, on mountains and across deserts.

And 60 years on its birthday will be celebrated at a special ceremony planned with a huge assortment of classic and current Unimogs.

Savage yoke, I went up Mt Enta in one. Not a bother to it.

The best allround 4 wheel drive vehicle ever built. Drove a 416 like this in Africa for a while, deserts or jungle mud were no problem. Portal axles and simple but robust mechanics were the secret to its success.

I hadn't heard that, but it is true for an Austin Champ

The Unimog factory is in the town my mam is from (Gaggenau), she used to work there before she came over here. Theres a seperate, privatly run museum in the town too. It's small but quality. Thery have a track they bring you around as a passenger that shows some of the things a Unimog can do, steep inclines etc. Bloody scarey when your in it :).It's well worth the trip if you in the south west and like Unimogs.
