Question Regarding Side Spin

Hi all, been playing pool a while but starting to get more serious. One thing that confuses me is side spin. I get that when trying to get out of a snooker that hitting, say, the right hand side of the ball will divert the ball more to the right when it come off the cushion. But when hitting an object ball directly with side should you make allowances?

For example, if using right hand spin, should you aim slightly more to the right to allow for the spin? Does the speed you hit the ball make a difference? I'm pretty sure the answer to these questions is yes but i haven't come close to perfecting the art yet.:)

I'm sorry if these questions don't make a whole lot of sense but i'm interested in getting better and i think having a competant knowledge of side will help me. thanks in advance. cheers.

Not a snooker expert by any means but the first thing to watch out for with side is 'squirt' (thats what the americans call it in pool, not sure what the term used in snooker is). In other words if you put right hand side on the white it will deviate to the left directly after striking it with the cue because it was hit off centre so you need to modify the point you're aiming for to allow for this.

The effect side had on the object ball is still something i don't really understand. I've heard some people say that a certain amount of side spin is transferred on impact, analogous to meshing gears. So right side on the white ball will end up as left on the object ball. But i don't really know if thats the case. I would have thought that the contact time was so small, and friction between the balls so low that this wouldn't happen? But don't know really. What I have seen is that left side on the white causes the object ball to move more to the right than the natural path and vice versa.

Just my thoughts on it. Would be interested in hearing what other more experienced players think.

Right hand spin will make the object ball go left, vincenzo gives a good summary of what happens. Friction is minimal but enough to have an effect, the balls travel together for a very slight distance

Speed and timing are key to how much it diverts the object ball.

Useful sometimes when its tight whether the potting angle is available. Bit of side and usually does the trick. Although the swerve element before contact with the object ball comes into this also.

Best thing to do is try it out on some simple pots and aim for a specific point like the jaw of the pocket and put some side on. Everyones cue action is different so its a question of practice to understand how much effect it has for you.
