Personally I would not recommend UPC for tv, only for there broadband service where it is available.

The channel lineup is crap compared to sky, with UPC u get nowhere near as many channels, and with sky u get loads of fta channels that u actually have to pay UPC for..

The picture quality is also far superior now on Sky and u get a Sky Plus Hd box on signup so BBC and Itv HD are free to view without any package...

UPC TV is good for one thing! Cheap ESPN and Setanta! Thats it! €32 euro a month with all the basic channels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_channels_on_UPC_Ireland) If you are into NHL, NBA, MLB, MLS, Bundesliga, Serie A and the odd Premiership game and Setanta Cup then go for UPC!

If not then go to Sky! Dont look back, just go! FAST :D

    UPC packages.

Yes, you can record one channel whilst watching another. In fact, you're supposed to be able to record two channels simultaneously, although the STB will need to be in standby.

Now, I have some questions... :)

Do you have to pay a standing charge to connect to the communal dish, or are you disconnected from the satellite system should you decide to cancel your Sky sub (i.e. - can you avail of Freesat afterwards)

I hold my hands up here and no to being the classic ignoramus who has stuck with the same bank and tv provider all my life. I, for example, did not know how rubbish my UPC MMDS Digital lineup was. Losing ITV 2 (note, not 3 & 4 all we get is 2) together with losing Virgin and Bravo (yes i know not UPC's fault and also gone on sky) with no price decrease just annoyed me over the edge.

So, went into the shop and asked how much sky do i get for my €68 per month. He gave me the list, I crossed off what I already have, and got really depressed. I made it 100 extra channels. I will lose espn though, which has stalled the ball for a little while. Apart from that I would be gone.

You can't recors one channel and watch another at the same time? Who told you this?? I live in an apartment, I have Sky+ and can record one and watch another no problem??
I had UPC before, all I can say is that from my experience it was brutal. Channels constantly failing, terrible customer service, billed wrong, billed for nearly a year after I cancelled it. Terrible.

    @Sugartri

Are you connected to a communal dish or do you have sole access to a dish?

    Sole access.

It's quite possible that the OP may be sharing a communal dish. There may be issues with recording.
If is is an issue, that'll keep me from signing up in the future.

As you've got a quad LNB for your good self alone, you wouldn't have that problem.

EDIT: From a post over at AVForums:
Most communal installs use a distribution system that is sort of the equivalent of putting an rf connection through a splitter amplifier to connect multiple boxes. Unfortunately this type of system is not compatible with sky+ which demands two independant connections, (you can't use two of the duplicated feeds for example even if there are spares).

It seems that there's a problem after all.

Well when I say I am a sole user I mean it is not an apartment connection which is set up by the management company. There is actaully one dish where four of us have our connections for our Sky.

Simply swap the quad lnb for an octo (takes about 5 minutes) and you can all get full functionality of the Sky+ boxes. It has more connections so ye can add your second cable for Sky+.
