Registering new car - do you just need chassis number or must car be in country?

    Hi

I've opted for scrappage after my 12 year old car failed an NCT for a number of small things and wasnt worth saving. It was a bit of a rush to get the car ordered so it will be in on time for the end of the Scrappage scheme on June 30th

I have been told today by VW that my new car is due to be produced/ assembled the middle week in June and that it will arrive in Ireland last week of June or first week in July

They tell me that once the car is made they will have a chassis number and can register with that even if the car has not yet made it to Ireland for the June 30th deadline. Is this making sense to anyone in the know about registering cars? Are they telling me the truth?

I guess Im just a bit worried about missing the deadline at this stage - anyone else in this boat? They guaranteed me that it wasnt too late to avail of the scheme and get an order in but at the end of the day it was only a verbal contract. If I miss out on scrappage Imafraid I'll miss out on the 1250 plus the adidtional 1000 from VW so it really changes the appeal of the deal for me!

My last question is relating to the scrapping date of my current car. According to the official guidelines the old car must be scrapped on or before June 30th but it also says it must be scrapped within 60 days of registering the new car. Could I interpret/ argue that I should get til the end of August in my old car? Just thinking that otherwise I may be without a car for the first few weeks of July while waiting for the car if there is a delay for any reason?

Thanks for reading - any advice appreciated

Sorry for being so long winded!

    cbisto

Cars can be registered with a chassis number, it doesn't need to be physically on site with the dealer. Had a couple of BMW's registered at the end of May before the 1st April price increase, while they were in transport from the factory.

Out of interest, what are you waiting on? Build week 24 seems quite a long way out for a VW.

Thanks for the info R.O.R - Its a Golf Im waiting on, nothing special in terms of extras or anything - ordered the first week in April and was told 10 weeks which is what it is turning out to be

Thanks for the confirmation that it is posisble :)!

Definitely possible, a little risky for the garage - if the car comes in with an issue (spec or damage) and you have grounds to refuse the car then they're stuck with a car they need to deregister.

    No issue for you though.
