Stiff clutch pedal

Just bought a 01 Citroen Xsara. The clutch pedal is quite stiff and when you push down its kind of stiffer in the middle until you push on through(if you know what i mean). Anyway it engages perfectly so I think its a small problem with the pedal or cable.
The car was used very little over the last two years. May have something to do with it....

Any quick lubrication of parts i can try before i have to try replacing the cable?

    Ta

I think the '01 Xsara had a hydraulic clutch ? No cable involved. Might be a thrust bearing problem but I'm not qualified to say for sure.

    Good luck !!

The mother had two xsara's and it was like this on both. It seems to be a characteristic of them. When we got the first one we brought it back to the garage and were told it was normal.

yeah, it can happen alright. I've a pal with an 06' Avensis with a stiff clutch pedal and he's had it with 3 different mechanics, and all say it works fine and is no problem.

Lazy mechanic i assume. My auld lad has an 04 avensis that had the same problem. he didnt even mention it to his regular mechanic and it came back like new. I can only assume it was a relativel easy fix.

they use an automatic adjustment cable and are a common failure

Cable is the first step, but I wouldn't be surprised if the fingers on the pressure plate of the clutch are worn. Very common in citroens/peugeots with the 1.9 diesel.

The fix for the Avensis diesel is replace the pressure plate
