NCT or pretest?

So it has come to that time again and I will be needing an NCT next month. I have put it through the last 2 NCT's with virtually no hassle but lately it is starting to show its age. I think it will need some suspension work and a new master cylinder maybe. Its a 1995 Peugeot 205 so its not worth a whole lot.

So the question is does anyone know a garage in the Dublin area that will do a full "NCT spec" test for less than €50 (the price of the NCT)?

Have rang a couple of garages that claimed to do it but one didn't have the emissions tester and the other didn't have the suspension tester. Any help or comments appreciated!

why pay another garage... just let the NCT do it.... they will tell u exactly what needs to be fixed to pass...

I was thinking that way myself alright. Just wondering if anyone knew of a good pretest place for less than 50 quid? Just trying to save a few euros really.

Virtually any honest garage man will most likely tell you that they do not have the necessay equipment to carry out suspension or brake balance test. Furthermore if they are decent they will tell you to go way and get it tested and if it does fail to come back to them with the fail report.

If your looking at it in terms of getting a garage that will do a pre-nct for the cost or less than the cost of the actual NCT do remember you will need to go away and spend €50 getting the car tested anyway and if you need it retested it will be €28. You are potentially going to be loosing money getting a pre NCT, but I cant really see how you could be potentially saving money

Remember garages aren't unkown to replace items that don't need to be also, ultimately for their own gain, so from that point of view you are best going with a list of what you know yourself needs to be done, you know it makes sense!

Thanks John. Didn't think the thing fully through. Would need to get a pretest for less than €28 to save any money. NCT it is then! Cheers for the post

yes and that is assuming that a garage who carried out this test for €28 would get it spot on re what does and doesnt need doing. Pretty much an impossibility as even with the best will in the world NCT centres/tester differ.

Always run it through the test first although get anything obvious that you can actually see yourself done first - stuff like blown bulbs, tyres that are defo worn and if you have any bodywork damage with sharp edges, stick a lump of tape on it. It doesnt have to be pretty to get you through.

No sensible garage will guarantee that a car will get through the NCT following one a cheap inspection.
