Dell Latitude- If I upgrade to windows 7 will it get rid of the blue screeen

Ok so the story is that I have an old Dell Lattitude Laptop. It has not been used much over the last few months because the blue screen keeps appearing when I turn it on. Although it can still load up after a few gos.

A few days ago my friend gave me a free copy of windows 7. I am wondering is there any point of installing windows 7 on the laptop? Will it fix the problems on the laptop or will it worsen them because the way the laptop is it is as good as useless.

Any opinions or replies would be appreciated.

To be honest you really need to find out what is causing the blue screen first.

Its something got to do with the driver.

    Which Driver?

What model is the Latitude? How much RAM?
Windows 7 Might load up on it, but may also be ridiculously slow or cause much more problems.

If you can boot it up at all, find your model on the dell website, and download all the newest drivers for it. Install them.

This is the link to the service tag that is on the bottom of the laptop. Do you think it is good enough for windows 7.

It's not going to run well at all. That laptop is ancient!

Seriously I just wouldn't bother wasting a Windows 7 license on it.

Download Ubuntu or another linux distro to use on it perhaps.

if the problem is caused by software settings then upgradin may inherit the same settings

if it's caused by hardware then upgrade won't sort

you can use memtest - IIRC its on the ubuntu cd to check memory - leave over night to test the machine

you can run ununtu live - wifi drivers may be tricky so just use a network cable for now - to check the machine without installing

    D610 / 512MB <--- not a prayer with windows 7 realisticaly

do you have XP or 2000 ?

don't forget to check for malware too

    it's take a pair of 1GB , might take 2GB's too

Thanks for the reply its currently running windows 7. I am going to try to run ubuntu on it. What version would you recommend the newest one because we are talking about about a 5 year old laptop.
