UPC, SKY or Freesat?

    Folks,

I'm still on the basic terrestrial pack - 19 channels.
I'm thinking it's time to go digital.
Options are UPC - SKY or freesat.

I've heard horror stories about UPC and that they are losing channels.
I don't like Rupert Murdock's political views so did not want to give him my money.
Freesat is only shopping and holiday channels.

So advice please - which option should I go for?

I guess it depends on what channels you watch.

If you only watch the UK terrestrials then Freesat is perfect, just remember that you'll also need Saorview for RTÉ which may require another box.

If you watch the likes of Sky 1, Discovery or Living then you'll need to stick with a pay service. If you're excluding Sky due to Murdoch then your only other upgrade option is to go digital with UPC.

Freesat is certainly a lot more then that - watty has written a couple of good threads on the topic - suggest you take a look at those - I was surprised at how much was out there for free !

That's just some available free, other satellites give you more, have a look in the foreign satellite thread for advice on that.

    sorry. no iplayer on Sky.
Less compression on satellite than cable.
should have added UPC also lose ITV 2 3 and 4

    Hi,

I would love to replace UPC with Freesat. Can someone point me in the right direction on who to contact about this. I am in Bray Wicklow.

Ideally I would like someone to call out to look at the current setup and discuss all options.

you need a dish (60cm should be ok)
Pointed at 28 degrees east (Astra 2 satellite)

    Try Tony at satellite.ie

Get a TV with freesat built in.
    I got mine from richersounds.ie
    they deliver from Belfast

or else a freesat box. Try Argos.

'discuss all options' is a bit vague and there are many things possible in satellite.
What do you have in mind ?

Adding to PAL's post which related to your satellite requirements....

You will need a UHF aerial to pick up the Irish TV channels as they are not on Freesat - lots of the the radio stations are but not the TV channels.
