Do many golfers play Pitch and Putt?

I'm a keen pitch and putt player and was just out golfing with a couple of friends yesterday. They play golf regularly (1-3 times a week) and although there able to drive a ball 250+ there short games are abysmal from 100yards in! I keep telling them to try out pitch and putt just to get there focus on smaller targets and it'll help there short putts too. Do many golfers on these pages play any Pitch and Putt i'm just curious:) I was a decent golfer a couple of years ago (h/c 6) but just don't have the time to play anymore but find when i do play my pitch and putt cuts at least 4-5 shots off a round

Been thinking the very same myself. Could do with a few practice rounds of pitch and putt myself.
The old art of.....GETTING THE BALL IN THE HOLE

Was at the range earlier and lost interest smacking 100 balls, grand evening that it was would of been better spent on something like pitch and putt to improve that part of the game.
Definitely gonna start going to one.
Anyone know if that one in Loughlinstown is still there or any other one about close by?

I'm actually a member in Loughlinstown! €100 to join for the year they don't take green fees. It's starting to get in good shape now after sanding the greens and the Dublin Gents Strokeplay finals are on there this year. There is usually somebody there around the course during the afternoon almost every night after 6 the course would have a few members on it feel free to ask any of them about joining

Loughlinstown is still very active judging by some of the members ive been talking to...

I try play golf and pitch and putt at the same time, and TRY to at a decent level. F*cking impossible. gonna have to pack one in soon :( the long irons just wont stay consistent enough, and if theyre good, P&P goes to sh*t, and vice versa.

Deffo would have a better than average short game compared to most of the guys i play with...

i played pitch and putt for years before i played proper golf....really helped with my short game...well, my chipping is pretty good, but my putting could be a lot better in fairness!!

Apologies for deviating off topic, but for Pitch n Putters - are you folks slaves to technology? Is it Vokeys and Pro V1s in in your hand, or is it bargain basement stuff?

I don't play pitch and putt anymore. But I would think it would be better to bring out your normal clubs. It's all practice.
If you use your vokey normally, bring your vokey.

    Cheers for that info mr.jingle.
Might well look into that alright, €100 seems well worth it and only few mins drive away from house too.

If it's not one thing it's another :D
I get out on long course about 3 times a week, be handy to have a pitch and putt place to go to with just a few wedges and not get distracted with driver and long irons with me.

Best to keep it up i would reckon and just a bit more time putting.
Would'nt want to lose the knack of good chipping whilst working on other aspects.

I might try to get back into it over the summer. Putting could do with some help.
You should definitely join Loughlinstown. Good price and only up the road.
Would be great for the short game.

    Varies.
I have a 30 year old club (wilson reflex) perfect for P&P,as do some of the better players, but others do use the modern wedges aswell. Nealrly all players use provs or pentas, as the commandos and player golf balls arent around any more..

Most likely will alright, would easily spend more than €100 on trips to the range over the year, may as well spread it out a bit and have another option.

This is one area that is driving me nuts at the minute. Was a p+p player first and foremost when i was a young fella, played for around 6 years and played at a good level (average round -8, played in many provincial cups etc) started golf in the midst of that and was lethal around the greens.

Finished playing both and i've now taken golf back up, as of last october and around the greens i'm a joke. So annoying to not be able to succeed at something i was so good at. Was tempted to get back to the p+p but i've developed a lovely shank with my wedges, and with the courses generally being tighter, i'm petrified i'll hit someone.

On a lighter note, was in the attic last week and found my old stash of commando's and even a torpedo.... there was a rumor in the past that torpedo's were banned from competition, never did know if that was true.

Played it like it was going out of fashion from early teens to about 20. I used to play three rounds a day up in good counsel in rathfarnham. Got really good at one point and was scoring in the 40's every round! Best score was 44 one of the record (I think I still have the card).

Anyway I found Saturday nights and football etc etc so P&P got halted. Last year I started playing golf and it's my short game that is by far the strongest and I owe it all to P&P!

I only just changed the putter I was using back then to a new scotty and sure enough putting has gone downhill.

I played a lot of P&P as a young lad and in my late teens started to play golf seriously. There is no doubt that a P&P background helps with the shortgame but I found that I couldn't play both, the swings are too different. Coincidentally I played my first game of P&P for 20 years at the weekend, played like a pudding!

Used to play P&P back in my school days.

When summer came I would be over every morning at 10am and play 2 plays and 2-3 round in the morning.

Home for lunch and back over in the afternoon.

Gave it up to play golf and how have given that up and thinking about going back to P&P.

Memories of all ireland s/play finals up in seapoint.

It was hard to play bought games as you really had two different swings.

I enjoy pitch and putt but some courses are atrocious with the hairiest greens you will ever find especially around cork..........however we do holiday in west cork and the pitch and putt club in Rosscarbery is quite fun and a good test.

I was a member in Glenville P&P for a few years in my teens and it was really excellent. Used to pay about £45 for a years membership, then 30p for each competition on a Friday. I even won one once! Any other day (except Saturdays which were for adults) and play for free. During the summer I'd get about 4/5 rounds in over a two day stretch.

Started playing golf last year, and haven't really played P&P much, occassionally pop up to Botharnabreena, but it's just too different to golf and I usually play terrible (not that my golf is much better).

Sure I don't even have any Commando's any more!

Hadn't time to play golf there one sunday last year so we went up to a P&P course, had our own clubs / balls etc. and they still charged us €12 to play a 9 hole course!! Was well shocked.

I paid €12 to play a Par 3 Course last year, no P&P course warrants that sort of fee! I don't think someone should have to pay more than €6/7 for a game

I was in Welch sports in Cork City at the weekend and noticed that they sell Commando balls. €6.50 for a pack of 3 with the P&P Ireland crest stamped on them.

Just in case anyone's looking for them

Just joined the CYMC Fairview P&P recently after a quick round. It's probably the only chance I will get to hold a club during the week so seems like a good idea.

After playing a round I found that you need to play all forms of small deft chips that will definitely stand to you in regular golf.

I use my normal wedge and putter but also plan to play pitch and putt with different clubs in order to force me to play different styles of shots.

A lot of the top players nowadays use a Wilson Reflex wedge it's become very popular over the last 4-5yrs. Vokey's are quite popular too and any sort of putter is usually found around with Odyssey's being used aswell as 40yr old putters! Personally i use a scotty cameron and an imitation ping eye lob wedge pro-v's would possibly be the ball of most players choice. Not many use the old Commando's anymore or players, tornados etc.

    remember that course well.

I presume the course record is still 36 shots.

    3rd hole was a flick

14th I think is index 1 with the bunkers just short of green.

it is a short course but tight.

remember getting a hole in one on the 5th or 6th. You tee off in the back corner on the left

Definightly not one of my favourite course in Dublin some of the shots are baring on the ridiculous! A 23meter hole with a bunker 5 foot high at the front and the green sloping away from ya! Even Mickleson would struggle on that one!

Name and shame is right if that's a PPUI affiliated club i'd be very suprised

Still in great condition holds a lot of national and provincial championships year in year out. Greens sometimes can be slow but when there good there good.

Never played Rosscarberry but heard very good things about it. Think there are 2 courses. There is a problem sometimes that greens on P&P courses aren't up to scratch but over the past few years the standard of green is improving with a lot of work going in mostly voluntarily and the PPUI using a Greenkeeping course to try and improve the standard.

The Irish Open for Pitch and Putt was on the weekend in Killarney on a course called Deerpark. Some people call it a mickey mouse sport but if they seen some of the shots being played and the amount of time lads spend on there game you wouldn't believe me its a pretty big deal with at least 300 people down there watching and over 100 players Nationally and Internationally! I don't think many golf tournaments could be run as good as that was over the weekend.

Yeah the record is 36! 4 Hole in One's i believe. John Dennis was his name think he's still playing haven't seen him around this year though yet. All retty much spot on about the course it could be either the 5th or 6th as both of tees are beside each other!

    36

When I played my game there I thought that the first hole was the strange one - green located directly behind a 15 foot bushy tree and right beside the clubhouse room. I was actually afraid of shanking one into the thing while trying to lob one up over the tree.

    5th hole it was.

    11th another annoying hole.

12 you could use the bank i think.

There is also a short course in Blarney with a campsite, caravan park attached to it(or its attached to the campsite), very short course but I enjoy some of the holes where you have to use the flop shot to get it close, I must look crazy taking a full swing for a 45m shot!!! I have used my putter on occassion too teeing off, reason being there is no way you could go over a certain tree and it's very hard to punch a lob wedge!!
