We need a good air show here again. The one at baldonnell in 2000 was class. It's a pity you have to travel to the UK to see one.

I was at that one too, i seem to have some recollection of an accident at that air show? Was there a fire or something? Maybe it could be something else

I was at it too. I think you might be referring to a chipvan going on fire. Now that i think about it, that could have been at RIAT '03.

The memory of that event was the tornado that came in from the Wicklow mountains and set off all the car alarms in the parking area, then he shot past the tower and they announced he was in a rush to another air show in wales.

I'm very tempted to go again (I was at it last year). Was very enjoyable, and the F-22 was simply awesome :)

    Wouldn't mind seeing the A-10's :)

I'll be there too....If you get the chance go early and catch the Thursday and Friday arrival days . They are as good if not better than the show days with the practice and you get to see most of the static stuff arriving...;)

Lads around how much would it be to go to this, I figure you could make it a one day trip but I'd prefer if I did it right a little more relaxed.

    Cheers

Apparently so, although I have never been to them. You need your own transport or be staying pretty close to do the other day

A one day trip from Ireland ? Not so sure. The flying display is from around 9.30 am till around 5.30 pm so a full day. Acommadation at this late stage in that area or Swindon will be hard to find. You could always stay in Bath or even Bristol and get the train to Swindon then the shuttle bus. We are staying in a B&B at £60 per night for a twin room in Swindon. nfo on show tickets can be got here http://www.airtattoo.com/airshow/Airshow-Tickets

Hope this is of some help.

There is no way you could do it as a day trip from Ireland unless you got up at 1am and arrived home at 6am the next day....
As Vulcan has already said the flying display starts early and finishes around 5.30-6 pm..

If you want a good spot on the crowd line it means being in the queue about 7am and then when the show is over it can take a few hours to get away if your in a hurry leaving...
As Vulcan has also mentioned the accommodation near the show sells out months in advance and also increases in price...

I'm lucky as my Sister lives 25 mins from Fairford so I head over on the ferry on the Wednesday before the show ,drive down and stay until the following Monday ...

Sure you could do it in a day i done it last year with a few mates ,got the first flight out at 6.30 flew into Birmingham and hired a car its an hours drive from birmingham got there in plenty of time, heading home we got the last flight out from birmingham.Didn't cost that much either if you book ur flights early

Ukranian SU-27 Flanker and IL-76 added to the static display :D Great addition since the Ukranians haven't been in the UK for the last 12 years.

I worked it out roughly €150 to fly to bristol, train to swindon, show tickets, train back, fly home that night. On the saturday i think. Obviously you'll spend more but i'll be doing it on a tiny budget :D.

just a short hop from RIAT, it's the Cotswold Air Show this weekend :

    http://www.cotswoldairshow.com/

Vulcan will be flying. 60th year of the Hunter is the focus this year.

im going to this, my first time :o, i was at baldonnell in 2000 and never missed a show in salthill (pity its got cancelled:mad:) we're driving over, getting the ferry Thursday Morning and arriving there for around 4pm, we're camping on a campsite that over looks the runway, so we should see a good few coming in for the static display :D, cant wait

Any tips or hints for the event? we have tickets for the saturday show.

can anyone tell me how long it took from purchsing your tickets online untill they came in your letterbox?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,021 ✭✭✭johnny_doyle

ticket took a couple of weeks for me. Quicker than I expected. Post to Ireland might be a bit longer.

this will be my first visit to the riat, i am just wondering the site looks massive, do you need to plan where your going or will you be able to see the flying displays as you snoop around the static dislays or will you have to choose one or the other?

The size of the show is the reason I go on both days ,to see the display from a good spot means arriving early 07.00 and then when the flying ends 18.00 approx I wander around half the static until the throw me out at 20.30.

I'm not sure you would get a good view of the flying from the static areas as there would be a lot of people to get in your way....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,021 ✭✭✭johnny_doyle

some of the stands block your view if you're trotting around the static displays. It is worthwhile checking the timetable and noting anything that you really want to watch and making sure you're in a good spot.

Many people take loads of stuff - picnic blankets, chairs, etc and set themselves up in good viewing locations with one or more keeping sketch on the gear while others go for a wander. Personally, I like to wander around.

Yeah Saturday morning was horrendous and the flying didn't start till about 12.30, but the afternoon was really very pleasant. Sunday was pretty damp as well in the morning. Had a greta show though despite all the all the wet stuff. Will chuck up a few pics here when I sort some of them out.

I was there Saturday. The rain in the morning was a bummer, but it cleared up nicely for the afternoon :)

I have pictures in the Picture thread for anyone interested.

Vulcan, have you any idea why the A10 had to finish it's display early on the Saturday? I couldn't really hear the speakers properly

No, they didn't really say, or if they did I didn't hear it. He did the full display on Sunday and it was awesome.

I was listening to the scanner during the show and the A-10 said he had a electrical problem, he even offered to do some fly-bys to fill the display slot but the tower told him to land as the next act was ready to start....

A few of my pics from the show....

    @westdub great pics.

What time were the red arrows up at? Was there on sunday but must have missed them. Were they better than the saudis?

Well worth the trip - even the weather behaved itself!

some very nice photos there. Thanks for posting them.

The A10, Spitfire and Hurricane remain my favourites but amazing what you can do with an Apache, a Chinook and a "mini-me" Hercules :)

A very good day out on Sunday in spite of the rain.

Next year RIAT is a bit earlier in the month.

Yeah, it's a week earlier, the weekend of 7th / 8th July, something to do with restricted air space around the London area during the run up to the olympics I believe.

I've added more photos to my set at the departures day - if you've never been I'd highly recommend a trip.
