This usually indicates burning oil. Is there any chance it would happen when the engine hasn't been turned over for a few weeks? I think I'm looking at a much bigger problem though. The smoke was heavy at first and seemed to get less and less. Am I just being hopeful here?

What car is it? It doesnt have forged pistons or anything like that does it?

When you were driving it before had you noticed it burning oil or anything?

Did you take it for a spin?

Its a 96 fiesta 1.3 Endura E engine. I didnt notice it was smoking when i got it a few weeks back. I havent been able to give it a spin because its been up off its wheels pretty much since i got it. It should be ready to drive tomorrow. Its also missing when ticking over!

The way you describe it, it sounds like the stem seals are worn. When cold they contract allowing oil to seep into the cylinders. once started they warm and soften so the leaking isn't as bad.

So I guess if its stem seals that all the seals will need replaced?
