xbox controller hack to arcade control panel

In my quest for a cheap mame solution I have reached the point where I need to "connect" an xbox to an arcade cabinet.

Has anyone here hacked an original xbox pad to use as an arcade stick? I've taken it apart as much as I could, but all the tutorials/info I've seen on web relates to the 360 pads, so I'm kinda stumped at the moment. I need to find a circuit layout of an original xbox controller.

I've got all of the stuff I need, empty cab, crt tv, and modded xbox running mame (albiet the most basic of mames), just this is holding me back

Looking to do the same once my candy arrives:)
Also found out you can get pre-made boards with screw in terminals from akihabarashop. They are called ps360 but out of stock at the moment.

Also i remember seeing loads of useful picture guides as to where the various button soldering points are on slagcoin.com.

Suits me down to the ground as soldering is not one of the skills I excel at..plus if ya mess up you need to get a new joystick board

Scrath all that : I thought it was 360 pads you were looking for

Unky hit on it though, slagcoin.com has pcbs with soldering points there are 4 or 5 original xbox controllers in there

These PCBs will work on Xbox1
    You'll simply need a USB-to-Xbox1 adapter.

I've been using this guys tutorial so far, but on the 3rd video I get confused about what he's talking about, am I looking to remove the pads which cover the ground or am I looking for the signal?

oh yeah, this is the diagram of the pad I am hacking.

You're looking to remove the black carbon covering to expose the copper plate.

Not doing this would prevent solder from sticking to it.

I realise that ;) what I meant was that in the tutorial video he only takes off one side of the carbon, so I'm trying to figure out which side to take off :)

You need to expose only the "Signal" pad (blue circle).

For the common ground point, you can expose any part of the PCB that's not a signal.

KO Kikki, just actually looked at the dual strike link you gave me ... am I right in saying that I just need one (or 2 of these) of these and a usb to xbox adaptor and I'm done (i.e. all I'll have to do is technically wire up a cp to the dual strike and connect that to the xbox via the xbox to usb adaptor cable?)

    Correct.

You would need 1 Dual Strike & adapter per player.

    And lots of wire.

arrrgghhh, I'm losing my mind trying to solder this feckin xbox pad. I'm sure I scraped off all of the carbon from that part I've to solder, but it won't stick, I've just ended up with a little pool of dark sludge over each signal pad :mad:

Coming back from the dead like Jesus, this thread is being resurrected ... gonna try to give this a go soon. I've got hold of 2 heinous fatty original xbox controllers that I'm going to take apart and try to turn into a stand alone control panel for my modded xbox.

Now looking back through this thread and from what I recall from my first go (that ended in disaster) I need to

    1. dismantle the controller and solder wires to the various points listed, below.

    xbox_diagram2.jpg

    2. connect the soldered wires from the controller to a dual strike,

    3. wire the dual strike to a joystick/buttons

    4. connect the dual strike to an xbox using a usb to xbox wire

Is that it in a nutshell?

If it is it still sounds terrifying to me!!!

If you are using a dual strike, you do not need to do a padhack for the xbox. The dual strike is already compatible with the original xbox, just plug usb cable from dual strike into a USB port that has the xbox controller port on the other end (you will need to source one of those cables), which obviously plugs into the xbox. It will also work for a PC running mame or a PS3, and I believe a few other consoles with usb adapters.

The only padhack that you need for the dual strike, is for the xbox360. The screw terminals that are on the dualstrike, you run wires for each of those buttons to your arcade buttons.
