when do people start to look "old"?

Start to get wrinkles and stuff and plainly look like an "adult" face wise. I am 24 now, and have started to get some lines on my forehead, and some bags around my eyes slightly. When I was a younger adult (18-23) I didn't get any of these.

The thing is some people in their late 20's-early 30's don't seem to get these "looks", I dunno. They don't look that old, but some people 23 years old plus look at least 4-5 years older. I think I get a lot of this from when I was a child, and looking at grown up people on TV and in real-life, and thinking "they are an adult".

It happens to everyone at age 31, around about half seven in the evening on a Sunday.

Get a mortgage, get stroppy teenagers and you'll soon realise it's time to get a facelift!

Its all downhill after 21, at 24 there is nothing you can do but kickback and wait for your pension to come through.

Its all down to your genes i reckon. I dont look anywhere near 31 (or over it, smartarses).

Varies from person to person, diet and exercise make a huge difference...I recently was out for a drink with a friend when an old school mate passed by and stopped for a few words...When she had gone my friend asked...what class were you in when she taught you ????

On a sobering note my beutician told me that every woman should start using eye cream from age 22 onwards !!!

Genes and lifestyle play a big part of it, my wife is asian and looks about 10 years younger than she is. Going out drinking and partying a lot with poor diet and exercise also takes a heavy toll.

I still get asked how school/uni is going, so the answer is not 25 anyway

Depends on genetics and lifestyle as others have said. Lots of exposure to the sun, smoking and exessive drinking all take a heavy toll.

Drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, using a moisturizer regularly and not using harsh soaps on your face will delay or lessen wrinkles.

You don't really think there's one set answer to this question do you OP?

You answered your own question anyway with the examples you gave: it varies from person to person.

I'm 35 and I'm starting to look slightly older than I used to. I think when I was im my mid twenties I probably could have been mistaken for a teenager. I remember when I was 23 I had trouble getting into a nightclub.

I'm starting to get a few lines around my eyes now and I have a few grey hairs (maybe about ten). I could probably still pass for a 25 year old though.

I think the time to worry is when long hair starts sprouting out of your nostrils or ears.

I wouldn't get too concerned about an arbitrary age thrown out by a person working in the beauty industry (and therefore keen to promote cosmetic products). :)

I'm not sure we're the best judge of what age we ourselves look. ;) Too biased.

Eye cream is such a gimmick - it's moisturiser!
Where did she get 22 from also? She's talking bollocks.

I haven't used eye cream yet - I was 22 nearly 11 years ago, never used eye cream and I still don't have crow's feet or under-eye wrinkles. Now much of that is no doubt due to genes - but there you go: it varies from person to person. I use ordinary moisturiser all right though, and try to drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruit/veg but I don't do any of these consistently and I enjoy having a few scoops at the weekend.

One thing I've always been very consistent about though is minding my skin from the sun - keeping it shaded as much as possible, and always putting on a SPF.

I started going grey (hair) when I was 16.It was great for getting served in pubs and chatting up older women.. I'm in my early 40's now and still feel like a teenager, although i look a lot older. I think how old you feel is far more important than how old you look.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 262 ✭✭Console

As other have said diet and exercise will have alot to do with it... if you are eating cheeseburgers, smoking and drinking alot. it will age you more. obvious.

But as for when a person starts to look 'old' ... It depends on what you mean.
I find its around 22-23. Thats when a person (generally) loses that fresh face (youth)

I know people in their 30's who look like they've just graduated from full-time college and know people in their 20's who look like the back of my sack!

There is no set age: some are lucky and some are not, at the end of the day who gives a flyer what age you look so long as you don't act like a teen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,900 ✭✭✭InTheTrees

I always looked younger than I was then I went grey at age 35.

I'm 49 now and still look younger than I am but its catching up, skin gets looser etc.

A lot of it is in the eyes too I think. You cant hide old eyes.

The added respect is nice, there's also a feeling of being an adult finally thats hard to describe.
