Online startup courses

Hi, just looking for feedback on online courses. Is it absolutely essential that you need to attend a physical (probably not right word) course rather than an online one if you want to start a business?

I have an IT degree in the chosen area and Im currently going through the Bank of Ireland online startup course whereby they send you a module every day to study. Am I wasting my time? If the content is the same as a sit down course, then I cant see what the difference is, if its just a tutor going through the same info on some powerpoint slides.

I'm wondering do I need some kind of certificate of attendance for these types of courses before I do my business plan and get things in motion.

    Thanks in advance.

As with many things, it depends. Most people start a business without attending any course.

Online may suit you well with your IT skills, although what you will miss will be the interactive nature of a face to face course both with the trainer(s) and with other start up people. You will pick up more this way.

    So therefore:
    - you are not wasting your time doing the course online
    - face to face is not absolutely essential but in my opinion it is preferable
    - you do not need any certificate although some grant funders may insist
    - you do not need to complete a course to do a Business Plan

Completing the course either online or face to face will help you to make your Business Plan better. If the trainer just goes through PowerPoint slides, then the course is not good enough.

One last tip, try to finalise your preferred 'Business Model' first and then find someone objective who knows about business to challenge it with you. This will help you with your Business Plan.

    Thanks for that info.

I hope to attend a startup workshop in a few weeks, as you say some face-to-face meetings with people who have started IT companies would be a huge help as opposed to just trying to pick up everything online or in books etc.

Looking at the whole tax/accounts area is quite daunting, I reckon I'll definitely need to do some sort of course in that area soon.

    Cheers.
