PS3 Noob - Wireless router/streaming

    Hi all,

Having failed to pick one up in Tesco, I've eventually purchased a PS3 from Amazon, £200 - very happy with that deal and it should be here by Thursday, just in time for the long weekend!

    I intend to use the PS3 for two things primarily;

    1) Streaming live sport sites direct from the internet
    2) Streaming standard avi and mp3 files

I have UPC 10mb internet connection and need to set up a wireless network. I was thinking of buying the standard Netgear WRG614 router of which there are many about on adverts – would this be sufficient to stream the above or should I just stump up now for the N series? My house is quite small, but the router would be upstairs and ps3 in the room downstairs.

Is there any other software I need to download to get the streaming sites to work easily? Any recommendations as to good sites?

(I presume this discussion is ok given that Boards allow posting of links to live match streams…)

    Thanks

    Mollser

    Hi There!

Unfortunately I can't actually answer your question(s) as I don't have a PS3 yet either, however I notice that you ordered one from Amazon for £200 (so I'm guessing it was from Amazon.co.uk).

I am also intending to order from Amazon.co.uk for delivery to Ireland (Cork specifically) as the price is just so much cheaper through Amazon than buying it in this country.

I'm intending to place my order on Thursday, so it looks like you're a few days ahead of me - As such I'd be keen to hear what date yours arrives, whether there's anything wrong with the condition it arrives in and whether you get hit for additional Taxes.

Will be following the thread and appreciative of any answers you can provide to the above once you receive it so I get an idea of what to expect :-)

    Thanks a lot!

I'm not aware of any legal sports live streaming sites so your presumption isn't sound :(

This is certainly based on illegal streams.

Hopefully your UPC 'box' is somewere close to your TV, if it is use an ethernet cable to connect your PS3. As for streaming google and see what hits you get as I'm fairly sure it's not allowed to post actual streaming sites on boards.

One thing to watch when streaming is your download limit, yours is 120GB (like mine) I think. Just be careful if you download torrents or large files along with watching sports or movies on-line.

Another thing to watch out for is if you have your phone with UPC also, that a wireless router might not have a teleohone line connection; the one they provide does and at €50 might be an option.
