While having a look around the web, I found that Neil Back is credited as being the oldest test lion. Would this now not be John Hayes?

    Simon Shaw is indeed older.

What do you mean by oldest Lions test player, as in still playing? Can't think of anyone after Shaw who's older than Hayes.

Just out of interest, how many tests did Hayes play in? I think he came on as a sub in the last series (remarkable) but his wiki from quick inspection says he has 2 caps, but can't think of another Lions test he played in.

He played in one of the non-test matches towards the end of the tour, but I'm pretty sure it was just the one test appearance.

Back gave an interview with the sunday times at the weekend that he was the oldest Lions test player, he would have been 36 during the '05 tour, Shaw turned 36 the sept after the '09 tour, Hayes would have turned 36 the November after the '09 tour

Did Hayes get a run in the dead rubber test in Auckland in 05?

I can't remember a minute of that game as we decided to drown ourselfs in crappy Kiwi beer instead of going to the match. I still have the ticket some where.

No, Rowntree was sub prop for all 3 tests. Can only assume someone is incorrectly counting the appearance against the Emerging Boks as a test cap.

I thought the last game in SA was Hayes' first Lions test cap. Great achievement for the man, IIRC he did well in the scrum too.

He was the oldest at the time. It was just bad journalism.

 Back still is the oldest. He was 36 when he played. Shaw was 35.

Oh, was he? I thought he was older then. Ignore me so.

Didn't he play in the game against Argentina in Cardiff before the 05 tour?
According to wiki the IRB retroactively awarded it Test status in 2008.

I read that interview with Back in the Irish Times, wouldn't have alot of time for the guy. Regardless of all the "Hand of Back" nonsense he comes across as full of himself. Surprising considering Leeds Carnegie are ****e.
