E.U. / Irish entry law for non-eu citizens?

    Hi,

I have a good friend who is from the united states (American citizen) who wishes to come and visit Ireland, but I'm just curious as to what the Irish / E.U. law is for someone entering Ireland with a criminal record?

He got a record about 5 or 6 years ago for DUI (driving under the influence) and he is since able to drive again and has not been in trouble since (he was just 20 at the time).

He said that he can't enter Canada for 15 years from the date of conviction for this offence, but I'm just wondering if there are any laws that could potentially result in him being refused entry into Ireland for this offence?

    Thanks for any information.

As a tourist I can see nothing that would stop him from entering Ireland.

The 2004 Act does allow for people to be barred from entry for having committed crimes of a certain level of seriousness (which DUI conceivably could qualify as). The question is whether your friend would be caught. As a non-visa national he is not subject to any sort of pre-clearance, and I'm not sure whether they have the capability to make those checks at airport immigration. My instincts would say "probably not" but he should check with an immigration lawyer just to be sure.

    They don't.

It is all on an honour system.
