Arghhh, full internal memory.

    I'm getting annoyed with the internal memory on my htc desire. The phone says that it is full, but I only have a small amount of apps currently stored on the phone;

    Google maps (10.5mb)
    Facebook (9.2mb)
    Twitter (7.25mb)
    HTC_IME mod (5.52mb)
    Gmail (5mb)
    Go SMS (4.3mb)
    Market (4mb)
    Go Launcher (3.7mb)
    Astro (3.6mb)
    Go Contacts (1.5mb)
    Youtube (1.3mb)

    Then I've got 9 other apps that are all under 1mb, most under 500kb.

    So that's around 60mb total, and I can't download anything else without deleting something first. Is this normal? Can I do anything to clear up more space? It's not like I've got loads of unnecessary things installed, it's almost the bare minimum yet the capacity warning is nearly always displayed :mad:

    Any help would be great.

    Well you could move a couple of them to your SD card, ASTRO, Gmail, Maps. that'll save ya a bit of space.
    Best bet is to partition your SD card and use S2E.

    I have Apps2SD and it says I can't move anything that I haven't done already. Do I have to root in order to do so?

    Ye you'll have to root unfortunately. Though I suppose its such an easy thing to do, ya may aswell get it over with, and be able to use those few extra apps on the market.

    Its one of the couple things I hate about the Desire though (the back cover plastic camera lense is the other). Its a seriously **** amount of internal memory which means you need to modify your phone just to get a decent amount of apps installed!

    I completely wiped the phone and stuck on Cyanogenmod7 and did the S-OFF, then got S2E off the market, and AdFree and now I'm pretty much sorted.

    PS Apps2SD is useless! Go into "Settings" and "Applications" and move them from there.

    Would you have a recommended link for a good rooting method?

    I agree...it's a real drawback especially given the average user probably wouldn't know anything about rooting.

    What's the S-OFF and S2E :o ?

    Thanks, I think I'll just root, was going to have to do it eventually!

    Are you sure your space is full? could there be files there, say hidden in trash that are taking up space? Happens on computers a lot.

    If you're running a custom Rom with CWM you could trying clearing the cache and see if that helps.

    Dalvik Cache is probably choking the memory... How long have ya had it and you ever reset your phone?

    I had the same issue as the op - couldn't add any apps as I had less than 15mb free despite A2SD and then there was no syncing also. So I rooted using unrevoked3 and added apps2sd+. My desire is like a new phone now with as many apps as I want.

    not sure if we're allowed link to rooting methods, but as the bloke above says, look for unrevoked3.
    S-OFF -> alpharev.nl
    S2E -> Market

    I think S2E is the same/similar to Apps2SD+, but not sure.

    You'll also need to partition your SD card to use S2E.

    So I've finally rooted the phone :)

    I'm just wondering what I have to do now? I'm trying to make sense of the different things I'm reading on different forums.

    Do I have to install a ROM now, or did unrevoked3 come with a ROM?
    If I have to install a ROM, is there a recommended one?
    Do I have to backup the SD card before doing any of this?

    Thanks for the help!

    What you really need is app2sd+ but it is probably easier to install a rom with it included. Download rom manager from the market to make it simple. I'm installing Leedroid (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038195) with Android 2.3.3 at the moment or you can get a modaco one from desire.modaco.com.

    If you want to avoid the hassle of reinstalling apps you have then get titanium back first now that you are rooted and use it to back up your existing apks so that they can be reinstalled.

    Thank you, I might give Leedroid a go :) Do I have to partition my SD card still?

    Rom manager has a partition option - you do need an ext3 partition for using apss2sd+. I used minitool Partition Wizard on windows myself to create the partition.

    partitioning will wipe the SD card so back up anything on it that you want to keep.

    Just to update, I successfully rooted and am now running Cyanogenmod7 and wow, what a difference. Gingerbread is way more slick, loads of nice little finishes, and being able to store everything on the sd makes life so much easier.

    I'm using the Pure calendar widget Pure messaging widget because I missed the HTC Sense mail/calendar ones and they do the job nicely.

    Ran in to a couple of road blocks here and there during the process but overall it was quite straightforward, and Googling for the problems I had generally took me to forum threads with people solving those same problems.

    Would recommend it to anyone considering it and a big thanks to everyone here who helped me :)
