So..... the sky+ box has given up the ghost completely and won't even turn on.

I'm thinking starting a new contract with them would get me a box with free installation rather than €100 for an engineer to come out and try to fix the box.

Am I correct in thinking that even if you don't sign up for HD, it's sky+HD boxes are what's given out these days(The one with the significantly better UI?)

I saw the link from fatcheese.ie, but are there any other deals that anybody knows about?

Sky+ HD boxes are standard issue now.The deals on fatcheese are for new customers. If you upgrade to HD through Sky the box installed is €30 BUT you have to pay €15 per month for HD pack.
If you cancel your sub and sign up under a different name then you can avail of any 'new customer' deals.Sky don't like you doing this however;)

There is a deal for existing customers at the moment of 100 euro cashback if you upgrade to HD and a free HD box.
Alternatively tell Sky that unless they give you a new box for free that you will cancel as you cant view their service.
They wont be long accomodating you.;)

I had the privillage recently of my sky + box breaking... likewise Sky wanted €100 for an engineer... as much as I insisted that an engineer wasnt necessary ( i knew the box was unrepairable and so did the tech support guy), just post me the box they refused....

told tech support fine and to transfer me to accounts dept, as i wished to cancel my subscription... got transferred and lo and behold they waived the fee as i have been such a great customer......

on a side note.. if my Sky + box goes again what are the options available for other non sky boxes that i could purcahse that will accept the sky card and keep it alive...

The guys employed by Sky are installers, not "engineers". Consequently there is zero possibility that they will have the knowledge or tools to "repair" a Digibox. The best they'll manage is to reset it - just as you could do and probably already have. So all they can do is confirm the Digibox is faulty (rather than something else) and replace it.

I think the Dreambox will take a Sky card but do you really want the hassle?

Around six million happy Sky users would tell you that their Digibox works perfectly. But nobody is going to come on a forum to ask "why is my Sky box working perfectly?" so we don't get to hear from those people. ;)
