Need a set of the above - plan on getting the best tyres I can at the best possible price I can find so will be ordering online and getting them fitted locally. Current tyres are sports tyres that are good in the dry, ok in the wet and completely useless in the snow / ice. Reports on all weather tyres I've seen are that they are a jack of all trades and a master of none. Winter tyres, well it's not winter and I don't plan on buying two sets but the OH has winter tyres on her car and is still driving on them now with no issues.

Recommendations and links to possible options appreciated!

For the back of the 7?

I'm running a full set of Goodyear Eagle F1s on mine, very quiet tyre and great in the wet and dry. For me, the stretch to Michelin Pilot Sports wasnt worth the extra cash, see the reviews here:

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Goodyear/Eagle-F1-Asymmetric.htm

Performance is almost the same as the Michelins. They also come in the correct staggered sizes for the E38s if you're considering getting fronts too.

I ran them before, a nice tyre, also looks great. :)

Also MCMLXXV, the guy that fitted my F1s said they're around €1100 here for a set, some saving with Camskill.
Oh, and you can fit up to 275s on the rear of E38s no problem if you want a fatter tyre, even 285s.

    Thanks Voodoo!

Yeah, the 7er needs new rubber - the fronts are fine but the rears, well ya know yourself! ;)

Works out about €175 a corner - is shipping extra do you know? How were they in the snow? They seem to be out of stock by the way and I need them in the next week.

I was looking at a post earlier from Matt Simis from back in '09 saying winter tyres are most affective below 7C and are fine up until 20C - realistically how many days a year do we get over that!?! I.e. - would it be wise to buy winter tyres for year round use in this country?

Shipping was about €20 I think. If they don't have a tyre in stock, they can get them in stock in a few days if you ring/email them.

Not sure about the temps of winter tyres effective use, Matt knows his stuff though. But I can't see how a winter tyre grips as well in the dry as an all season/summer tyre, or is as refined. Defo not worth it in my view.

In the bad weather over the winter, the car wasn't great in all honesty, but it is rear wheel drive, no summer tyre is going to do well in snow or on ice. But I certainly didn't get stuck or have any near misses. I'd stick with summers and hope we get a mild winter, can't have 3 bad ones in a row right? :)

I dunno, the last three winters have got progressively worse and the last three summers progressively better. I think that trend is thought to continue!

Anyhow, I'm looking at either Camskill or Eire Tyres which both have good selections and prices but I'm leaning towards Camskills options so far. Seem not to stock economy tyres and prices slightly better.

For anyone else looking the tyres are for a 735.

I have vredestein ultrac sessantas in 245 40 18 and they are stunning tyres in any company. Excellent in the wet. Very fairly priced too although seem to have gone up about £20 each on camskill since I bought them.

Dammit, think Ill have to refine that comment I made about Winters in Summer! ;)

Right now I have nearly 1.5years (continuous through last spring, summer to now) on the E31 with winters on the rear.
I was checking out my tyres with the Bridgestone tyre gauge and noticed the wear pattern is indicative of an over pressurised tyre... the inner (centre) thread is very badly worn while the outside looks fresh (nice deep grooves).

My theory is the E31 specifies absurdly high tire pressure (2.7bar in the rear) which combined with the softer Winters and hot weather driving lead to even higher pressures within the tire (normal when tire is used on road) leading to what I would call excessive and premature wear (gone from 6mm thread to 1.8mm in 18mths / maybe 5000miles)

So in summary, if you are going to run Winters in warmer weather, err on the side of low'ish pressure is better. A much better idea would be either All Seasons (some good reports on specific AS tyres here) or my preference; dedicated Summer and Winter sets. Currently have Winters still on both the Alfa and Audi, but will change them.. no bad wear yet but noisier and mushier than when the temps were sub-5c.

If I was pimp rich Id be looking at the new Pilot Super Sports for Summer/Wet driving and any branded Winter for winter/cold.
