This is a touchy subject for some but I really think it needs discussing.
Elsewhere this is a grey area in places like Scotland and Wales. Pretty much against 'statutory' law in England with the government claiming all common land under a variety of umbrella company's etc.

However what's the exact rule of thumb in Ireland?
Is it still common law or easy-going for wild camping?
I reckoning in the rural areas it should be ok right?

Well, in Ireland, there is no common land. All land is privately held or owned by the state, so there's no wild camping at all like in the UK. In Ireland, you always need permission from the landowner. Some publicly owned companies such as Coillte allow anyone to camp on their land, subject to some rules. Other state and semi-states have their own rules, and private land owners can give permission to anyone they like, or no-one.

In general, in Coillte forests, as long as you're not running a rave or otherwise taking the piss, you're unlikely to be bothered. I prefer to be discrete, but people camp all over Wicklow, often within two feet of their car. You are pretty unlikely to be bothered by scumbags, but there are a lot of them, especially in North Wicklow. Thieves and joyriders are abundant. Cars being broken into isn't unlikely, especially at night and at the weekends.
