Transferring files - switching to mac :o

I am about to pull the trigger on a 15” i5 mac book pro, and I just want to make sure I have things in line before I will OS X. I was about to go for the 13” core 2 duo but have opted against it for various reasons. it’s been donkeys years since I’ve used a mac so I will be a complete beginner.

Firstly, I will be downloading ms office, looks to be a good deal here:

I have transferred all my excel and word files onto my external hard drive aswell my jpg. photos. What I am worried about is when I plug in the hard drive, will it start giving me hassle about formatting? And will it recognize the windows versions of word and excel? Will the photos transfer over ok?

    Appreciate the input..

I assume the external hd is NTFS, yes? If so, OS X will be able to read it but not write to it. So you shouldn't have any problem copying your files over to your Mac. You can reformat the drive at a later date if you wish.

Afaik the Mac version of Office is fully compatible with files created in the Windows version. Your photos should be okay too.

Apple have a good section on their website about switching, which includes a section on migrating files.

By not being able write to the hard drive you mean saving files to it? I was hoping to use the hard drive (which is in ntfs) to save down media files, are you saying I will have to reformat it to work with the mac? I really don't want to do that, which means i may have to switch between this and my windows laptop..

    thanks

Yeah, you won't be able to save or modify any files. Only read/copy them.

You can use the NTFS-3G and MacFUSE drivers to get around the write restriction. However, afaik this is kinda slow, so it would be better in the long run to re-format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT so it can be used with both OS X and Windows.
