I have this up on the woodcraft section with no reply so im going to post it here :

Hi Im on a new build and im after fitting Deanta Oak doors -four panel and some with half glass . I cant say i'm 100% happy with the finish on them and on the half glass ones the 'Stops' are rough enough on some of them and will need some slight sanding .
My question is if i'm going to varnish them it has to be a Matt type vanrnish so what type make should i go for ? And also what type of sand paper ? and should i sand them much ? The last thing is if i am to varnish them would i get a better finish by spraying them ?

I understand what your saying , but im just wondering would it not be a good idea to give them a quick spray instead of having to do it in a couple of years time .

Found it hard to source the internal doors, seems like no one is keeping much stock anymore!
Was lookin at Deanta doors too but they didn't have the bigger sized door in stock (34") or the smaller sized doors too (28" for ensuite) in the style we liked. Local shop/agent said it could be 3 months or more to get them in stock.

Apparently most doors sold here are now shipped in from Indonesia China or Brazil hence the long lead time. Local shop advised us to only go with Deanta if all our sizes of doors were in stock as they had very very long wait time for a customer in past for 1 or 2 doors that were not in stock.

From my search it looked like the "Oak" doors a lot of the suppliers had were just an oak veneer, that's why they are generally around same price as primed doors. Got a price from joinery to get them custom made, something like €300 per door! Needless to say the budget wouldn't have covered that.

Some suppliers got very wary/funny about the warranty when we suggested painting a finished door, saying the finish may not tyrn out great and also the Warranty would be voided and would not be responsible if doors warped after we painted them (this is after they suggested it!).

So maybe check with supplier/manufacturer before doing anything.

Theres nothing wrong with engineered oak doors, especialy the glass paneled ones.

They usually come from the factory with a protective waxed or oiled finish on them to help maintain the engineered oak surface.Mine are anyway.

Be very careful if you are going to recoat any of these doors. Most factory finish doors are finished with a lacquer, a varnish may not take to them.
