I have a 05 Focus 1.4 and when pulling away from stop there seem's to be no power, I have left the car into a local mechanic and he said that he cannot find anything wrong with it. I know that it is only a 1.4 but anybody out there had this problem before with a Focus??:confused::confused:

    Thanks.

My sister has the same car. It's an absolute dog! A bus will pull of the line quicker then it.

Have you only bought it? Or have you come from a more powerful car? The 1.4 Focus is known for being a touch slow off the mark.

NA 1.4s in that size of car should be banned - there is a reason these cars are called Paddy specials - because only in Ireland do people like buying such low powered cars.

I reckon a 1.4VVTi Toyota unit would pull the Focus around no bother, lots of manufacturers have 90+bhp 1.4s.

My grandparents have one of these. I had a 1l Corsa that was quicker off the mark.

I think it's saying something that the Focus Mark III will not have a 1.4 option.

True, but back in 2005 1.4 was the entry level engine in that segment and the Ford unit was p1ss poor and way behind most of the opposition.

The 1.4 VVTi is surprisingly lively in the 98-02 shape Corolla (about the only good thing in those cars - they're complete piles of poo in every other way) for that size engine. It's really good for a 1.4 actually. The newer ones weigh a lot more so no doubt they are quite underpowered.

Either way, there will not be a 1.4 (if there is, it will be turbocharged) in the new Focus now that Ireland has joined the 21st century and we no longer require Focus sized cars to be available in poverty spec 1.4 option.

I drive a 99 focus 1.4 and don't find it too bad. I put up big mileage driving on motorways and have no problem with it's power output.

Why do you bother to claim that the 1.4 lump in a focus was good?

    Low expectations I guess.

I have to say I had a 1.4 Focus (2003) for a couple of years and while it was obviously slow it wasn't cripplingly slow and certainly handled very well, much better than a 1.4 Golf.

The missus has a '05 1.4 model and I thought it was brutal slow taking off when we tested it, (but she'd had a claim so insurance was crazy if she went over 1.4), but it was a lovely car to drive so we got it.

She has the car 2 and a half years and has done 120,000 kms on it (99% motorway) and it really has helped free the engine. Once you get it up to speed its a decent enough yoke.

Same opinion as above. Not bad to drive at all. Better than the 1.4 2002 Golf I drove.

When you mention a 1.4 litre slowish car on a Motors forum, enevitably you will get blasted by all the motor enthusiasts with their smart comments. Some of them are funny, but after the first few stabs, it gets old especially when the person is actually looking for help.

But I'm sure you'll agree that takes a long time. I just traded in mine. It was slow.

I think when people here say a 1.4 golf is slow, or a 1.4 focus is slow, they mean it's acceleration is pants. Which it is. In both cars. I've owned one (a focus) and driven several of each.

What saved the focus for me, up to a point, was its handling. And yes, it bombs along happily on the motorway, but it lacks a bit of composure at higher speeds (130-140), and really struggles on some of the hillier sections.

I now have an S40, same platform, and its much more composed on the motorway drives. 1.8 engine (125 odd hp, Ford if I'm not mistaken). I would really have liked a Focus with that engine. Would have been a lot of fun. Unfortunately I knew even less than I do now about cars when I bought it. I thought: 1.4 focus instead of my 1.2 corsa = extra vroom vroom

The 1.4 mk4 Golf ain't quick but I can't see how it's THAT slow either. It's fairly adequate for everyday driving requirements. 2 + people in it and then it's slow.:pac:
