Can anybody remember the hot summer back in the 80s when RTE relayed Sky news for a few hours on weekday afternoons? People thought it was so cool at the time.

I remember when CMT was relayed. That was cooler

Are you sure RTÉ showed Sky News in the 80's? It only launched in 1989.

Was it not CNN they showed?

I remember that, I thought it was early 90s though, I was before the normal TV schedule began I think, which was a 2.30 with A Country Practise (before Live at 3)

I remember that, around 1992 or thereabouts.

RTE showed about two hours of Sky News, which usually included Sky News rebroadcasting part of NBC's Today programme (with Bryant Gumbel)

Bob Friend was often the Sky News presenter.

It ran from about 12-2pm, something like that.

That's correct, though I don't think it was as late as 1992. It would likely have been summer 1990 or 1991.

The line up was two Sky News bulletins and two half-hour slots of Today and IIRC was 11:30am-1:30pm, or certainly around that time.

Not sure about Bob Friend airing in that time slot - my memory says he was presenting Live at Five at that stage.

sky news was definitely being shown on rte in the summer of 1989 because i remember being surprised to see a sky news report on the cork-dublin all-ireland football semi-final

(match was played on 20th August 89, i saw the report the following day)

Yeah, on reflection 1989 sounds right, I remember watching coverage of the Tiananmen Square protests which would have been June 1989.

Remember when RTE showed Aertel?

I wish that there was some way of getting MSNBC on tv. I can't understand why they don't have it. The only mainstream news channel that's not Free to Air on the Sky package is Fox News (NHK world or something also that nobody ever watches).

FOX News belongs in the Entertainment section. That's not news. NHK World and NHK World HD are both FTA.
