Outside spar in tallaght village today, a homeless man asked me for money. I didn't have any change so i told him to hang on a few minutes. I was buying myself a few cans, and so on the way out i gave him one.

I know this was somewhat presumptuous and arrogant, but in my defence, If I gave him money he might have just wasted it on food or shelter.

Anyway, what's the boards.ie on giving beggars money/food/booze? I tend to give out coinage a lot, but honestly, I've never seen the look of joy on a homeless man's face*, as what I did this evening when i handed that bloke a nice can of cheapish lager.

    *Except that one time...

    I lost my job

Why? Ya drinkin'? That why ya lost it? Insider trading?? Haha just joking. What's your name?

    Al

    Hmmm. Speak up, c'mon.

I tell this story a lot as it is mildly awesome....

Was out with friends on a night out. We ended up buying one too many burgers afterwards (drunken fools part easily and stupidly with money). We saw a homeless man and went up and asked if he wanted it, to which he opened it up saw it was chicken and looked at us in disgust. "I hate chicken" was his reply. To which, we said to him that you do know beggars can't be choosers!

What made me lol was the next bit (and i swear this is true): he put it in his pocket and said "Niiice wun buud, I'll save dis fur aftur!!!!"

    After what???

The guy was a fcuking professional: no drinking on the job. The job being begging for money for which to buy drink with. He probably even has a website: www.givusyurmoneydotbleedincom.com.

Then the ol' rummy accused me of being an alco. I sh!t you not.

The Celtic tiger has a lot to answer for!!!

If you thought his face shined up at the prospect of a a beer - just imagine how he would have felt if you had given him a bag of smack.

Maybe some food would have been appreciated more and of better use?

A girl in work felt bad for a gypsy that was begging on one of the cold winter mornings we had last year. She offered to buy him a coffee and he looks up at her and goes [roma accent] "cappuchino" :D

I was only messing. I actually think what you did was very thoughtful. You made someone happy.

I think he might even have swallowed.

I hope he finds a dead baby mouse in his beercan and they settle out of court and it turns out he actually plays the cello (but stopped when he lost his hearing, after which he had gambled away his army deafness claim;which cost him his house) and he pays for surgery and fixes his hearing and then writes an amazing piece for the girl who works in Spar who he is madly in love with

these are the ties that bind us people!

In my old neighourhood there was a homeless guy who I knew well to see who used to beg outside the local shop. I'd often give him some change. One night I went to drop some into his hand and he offered me two euro and said would I ever buy him a can of beer as he is barred from the shop. I told him to keep his money it was on the house. I dont mind beggars who you know are real homeless, know what I mean?
