Rapper Chipmunk's new album is released tomorrow in Britain yet they have it in HMV, Dublin today. So here's the question: Are some mainstream CDs released here first or do the Irish shops just put the dics on the shelves as soon as they arrive and ignore the release date?

Pretty sure our charts run a day earlier than the UK, a lot of acts will therefore release their CDs a day earlier here to maximise sales in the first week and get better chart position

CDs used to be released here on Fridays, and in the UK on the following Monday.
presume for digital downloads they're released on the same day.

That's still the way it is, and now applies to downloads as well - iTunes will generally have a new release available during the early hours of the Friday morning, maybe even right after midnight.

Singles and album charts in the Irish Free State run from Thursday to Thursday. Hence CDs go one sale on Friday here. Them across the water get their CDs on Mondays because their charts run from Sunday to Sunday.

    So in a word, "yes."
