Tag you have to remove tags on sides of shorts. You can kick the ball, cant charge at people etc. etc.

touch, well basically when you are touched you must place the ball between your legs.

Touch is harder but overall better i find

Touch is an absolute pain to referee. There is so much scope for cheating in it.

I'll be playing touch over the summer - what cheating should I be watching out for?

Two biggest bugbears with it for me are time wasting with player over-running/not retreating to their spot despite having been 'touched' and the player denying being 'touched' in the first place.

Just messy (to ref anyway). Nothing clear and clinical as a tackle or a tag taking place.

I definitely prefer playing touch but have never played it against strangers.

Great fun to play as training with your own team when you can get away with using an honour code, we play every week in the summer and no refs required.

Two-handed touch, if the tackler calls it, it counts, no discussion allowed.

That's the thing - I can't see it working in a competitive environment.

Touch is better practice for union though - the 'range' of a two-handed touch is about the same as a proper tackle, while a lucky/brilliant diving one handed tag is possible in circumstances where a real tackle would be impossible.

    oh I beg to differ:

There are days when I'd love to do that in a game of tag!
