An Egyptian man has named his baby daughter "Facebook".

Gamal Ibrahim chose the strange moniker for his newborn to celebrate the country's January 25 revolution which led to the end of Hosni Mubarak's 30-year reign as president, which was partly organised on the popular social networking website.

The new father said he wished to "express his joy at the achievements made by the January 25 youth."

Family, friends and neighbours have flocked to bestow gifts on baby Facebook and are overjoyed with her unusual name.
    Has a ring to it!:p

Bet all the celebs are gutted they didn't think of the name first. Facebook Beckham....it was only a matter of time!

Any other ridiculous names out there?

i think this is a really nice story,

it was thanks to facebook that the revolution was so succesful in Egypt and they are closer to proper democracy.

how many Irish are called Michael after Michael Collins?

Ya but it would be more like calling your kid "The gpo" rather than Micheal wouldn't it

Then why not just call her 'Justice' or 'Hope?' 'Facebook.' Thanks da - I'm sure she's going to love explaining that one every day of the week for the rest of her life. Imagine it twenty years from now when she's down the dole office.

    "Facebook hacken-de-hacken-911?"
    "That's me."
    "Facebook? What's that?"
"My da was an idiot; there was thing on the internet a few years ag..."
    "The inter-what?"
"Internet - it was this thing where people could share information and stuff. Anyway, there was this site..."
    "Site?"
"...yes, a site was a type of virtual location where information was posted by users. Anyway, one of these sites was created by a guy called Zuckerberg..."
    "YOU'RE NAMED AFTER A JEW???"
"No! The site helped people communicate, sort of. It was important for Egypt where it was used to help garner support for a popular uprising which led to the downfall of Mubarak."
"I see - so it was a tool used by political activists?"
    "...whatever... just fuck off"
"Have you been looking for work?"
    "Yeah."

i think people on here are also missing a difference in culture here, its like the lebonese mother calling her child "Katusha" after the missles Hezbollah lauched against Israel few years back.

These people are calling their kids names with meaning and are proud of it,

better than people calling their irish kids Beyonce, Jordan, Britney etc. after whoever is in the charts or E news

You can hear the slagging she'll get now:

"Hey, how much to book your face?"

"Is it true millions of people get on you everyday hoping for a poke ?".

The only thing more bizarre than naming a child Facebook is that it is deemed newsworthy

Yes damn it where are our glorious revolutionaries, munitions and social networking tools responsible for toppling corrupt governments and foreign oppressors so that we may name our offspring after them.

are Beyonce, Britney and Westlife really all that stand out in our feeble minds when naming the young wans?
