I wouldn't call that a bargain tbh, if €40 maybe. Got a WD 1TB from amazon and free delivery few months ago for about €60 mains powered though.

I got 1 of those 500gb hdd in Lidl about 8 months ago. It just stopped working about a month ago for no reason, made a ticking noise. I minded it like a baby too.. I also know another person who bought one and the same happened to him.

I recently bought a 1TB(€59.99, Pixamania) thats hooked up to my PS3 and a portable 320GB Iomega (€44) i use for bringing to copy movies and music. Grand set-up

I wonder what make hdd is inside?

    Definitely not a bargain.

Harvey Norman always seem to have at least one make of 500GB USB powered drives for €49.99, makes are normally WD or Iomega. Very similar dimension wise, the lidl one is slightly larger.

Truth is, I avoid lidl electricals like the plague - i've tried dvd players, cd radio players, speakers and transponders and have never been particularly inpressed. In fact most have been returned - I still have the wireless earphones though which are brilliant.

Lidl in general have gone downhill, they're living on their name for being cheap, when they're not overly cheap and they don't offer the quality that Aldi do (imo).

I''m pretty sure it takes up more than twice the physical space also as it looks like a 3.5" drive not 2.5" usb powered drive as in original post

If you were standing in the middle of a field with a laptop, how would you plan on using those hard drives? Would you contact the ESB beforehand to install a domestic power supply there?

The products you've linked to are completely different to the portable hard drive being sold by Lidl. That hard drive requires a USB connection to the laptop, and nothing else.

Lidl don't make hard drives. If you look inside it will be some well known make of drive. Drives fail regardless of make. Thats why you need multiple backups.

Bought a 500gb portable usb powered drive for €49 in Easons a couple of weeks ago. Don't know if they still have them in stock. They had Imoega and Seagate. We bought the Seagate - no problems so far!!

If you need one drive as a backup consider buying a second one of a different make as a fail safe.
