Wooden retaining wall??

Hi all need some help on this matter.

Could anyone tell me what type of wood i can use for a 5 foot tall retaining wall that doesn't involve paying €20 each for sleepers.

Surely there is a cheaper way to do it??

Used scaffolding planks? around 5-6 euro each for 8ft long 9" tall (if laid on their side.

Cheers for the replys, was thinking that myself but was told that they would rot after about three years?? Not sure how true this is but that was the only reason i kinda thought about not going with that idea.

The scaffolding boards will rot and you'll be back to square 1 for the sake of a few €€?.

if retaining 5', I wouldn't even trust a €30 sleeper to be honest. Depending on what's being retained the forces could be quite considerable. I reckon reinforced concrete, or maybe a 'gabion' would be the most suitable.

5' retaining wall with used scaffold planks: madness, if not potentially criminal if there were to be an accident.

The sleepers will work iff fitted horizontally between vertical H section steel sections which are well buried into concrete.
