Dislocating shoulder

I'm looking for any recommendations for someone who dislocated their shoulder last January while playing rugby. He wants to start playing again but is worried about his shoulder popping out again. Does anyone know of a shoulder strap etc that would reduce the risk of this happening or any other recommendations. Thanks!

For this sort of advise, he needs to talk to his doctor/physio. They are the only people who can give him the proper advise

    Yeah, talk to a doctor/physio.

I dislocated my shoulder twice, playing rugby. It's horrible, and needs a good bit of physio and rehab to get it back in decent order. I still have trouble with it, even though the last dislocation was 20 years ago now.

Once it pops out, it's liable to happen again, as ligiments and tendons are stretched the first time.

Hopefully a doctor/physio can give you proper advice on this.

if he can get a referral to the Santry Sports clinic, had an operation there to repair damage to my shoulder

The shoulder joint is very small, only an area about the size of a teaspoon is actually a joint in the normally considered sense. It is held together by muscles, ligaments and tendons. Once a dislocation has taken place there MAY be a tendency for it to re-occur as the supporting structures may have been stretched or weakened by the initial injury. As the 'joint' is largely muscle, it is possible to strengthen the relevant muscles and this can help a lot. I would think that this would be a wise move for your friend. Not everyone who dislocates a shoulder has recurring problems, in fact it is more the rule than the exception. Think of Quinny. Surgery will stabilise the joint well if needed. While the shoulder joint can have these problems, one good thing about the fact that it has such a small synovial element to it is that in later life arthritis is a very, very rare occurrance indeed. Better to have a go than to give up because of what 'may' happen, particularly if rugby is important.
